Around Murs via the Grande Blaque

Lovely hike without much difficulty. After climbing uphill for just under a kilometre, just enough time to reach an altitude of 700 m, where the the panoramic view of Lubéron with its lowlands and further below the valley behind Murs, opens up to you. Just for your enjoyment, this view will last for more than 4 km. The majority of the circular hike is through forest paths.

Description of the walk

On arriving in Murs, coming from Apt, the car park is located on the D15 country road in the direction of Sault, right at the front of the intersection. This is a small car park. If there aren't any spaces, you will need to find another space in the village. You won't have much difficulty in finding one though.

Yellow Waymarker

(S/E) Leave the car park and start walking on the D15 in the direction of Sault for about 1.3 km. Follow this road which cuts across the D15A.

(1) A little after, leave the D15 to the left at the start of a bend between a cedar hedge and the entrance to a house. Follow this path which takes you to the D15 again.

(2) Continue on this road for about 150 m.

(3) Leave the road again, turning left. The Yellow waymarking on a telephone pole indicates the change in direction, but the path is not very clear. Going alongside the road for a few metres, you will see the path and the Yellow waymarking. Follow this new path until, about 600 m further on and for the last time, you re-join the D15.

(4) Opposite the property "Jas de Laurent", take the country road for about 150 m, the time it takes to go around this property to the right.

(5) Leave the road and follow the path (Yellow waymarking) on the left which leads to the Grande Blaque (700 m attitude) after 1.8 km.

(6) Veer to the left in the direction of the "Vallons" and start the descent back downhill following the waymarked path.
Be careful, after 20 m, take the path on the left and ignore the one on the right.
Now, for more than 4 km, you can let yourself be guided by this path which goes around the 'Combe de Fronse' and then the 'Combe de la Gayette'. There is no risk of going wrong so you can fully enjoy the view of Lubéron and the valley below, a real treat. Go through the Vallon (valley) de Petié and join the D4.

(7) Follow it to the left for 70 m and then take the path on the right which you follow for 200 m.

(8) You will arrive at a field of cherry trees. There are no waymarkers here. Cross the field on the left for 10 m. About halfway, you will re-locate the Yellow waymarking on a cherry tree (on the right) and, when you leave the field, the Yellow waymarking returns.
Next, go left along the dirt path which, after 50 m, turns into a small tarmacked road. Follow along this road up to the intersection with the D15a.

(9) Continue opposite by taking the dirt path which leads to another intersection with the D4 country road. Cross over it and continue straight on another tarmacked road for 80 m.

(10) Turn left. You will feel like you are entering a private property, but that's not the case. This is indeed a road which goes through the small hamlet of Vergiers, very rustic, for 150 m.

(11) At the end, at the crossroads, turn right onto the D15a which you re-join. After 500 m, you will re-join the famous D15 which you took at the start.

Turn right onto it to return to Murs in about 1 km. The closer you get to Murs, the closer you will be to discovering a very beautiful property called "Le Jas" and the Château de Murs, which is also beautiful, but private and therefore, unfortunately, not open to visitors.

Return to the car park where the hike ends (S/E).

Nice walk in this part of the Vaucluse.
You must visit the Bérigoule caves where the tragedy of the Vaudois took place in the 16th century.

You must include a visit to the Bérigoule caves.
Take them on the right between points 5 and 6 there is a cairn, on the map it's opposite the 600 level curve.
The start is a little hard but it avoids having to go back to the start from the place marked by a pallet (as indicated in other comments).
I hope I've made myself clear.

It's a beautiful spring day with lots of little flowers everywhere, and the route is well described (at point 4, make sure you follow the bend and don't go straight ahead so you don't end up at "La Farigoule" in the bushes (I've been there)).
It's a beautiful circuit and it would be a shame to miss the visit to the caves on the side of the rocky barrier, just opposite La Farigoule: to do this, turn right after the small steep path at the level of an electricity pole and an old pallet.
It's a leisurely 4? hours, loaded down with the pretty flints that grow everywhere at the start of the hike.
The only downside: maybe park at point 1 to avoid 2x1km of tarmac.

Nice route. We parked below point 1 (to the right of the intersection of the D15a with the D15, there's a small car park next to some bin containers), which meant we didn't have to drive far. Thanks to Nichou for this suggestion.
For access to the Bérigoule caves, there's no need to go up to the intersection 200m upstream of Grande Blaque as Bobrunobo suggests.
Halfway between Jas de Laurent and Grande Blaque, a path rises to the right, marked by a large cairn. It climbs quite steeply, but you immediately reach the caves. Follow the cliff up to the left to visit the various caves, then the path continues to climb. You come to an intersection with a small cairn marked with a double blue arrow. Turn left and continue to the intersection described by Bobrunobo with the old pallet, 200m upstream of the Grande Blaque.
Thanks to fm600114 for his historical comment.

A magnificent walk! From Grande Blaque onwards, the path is on a balcony and it's a real treat.
If you set off early, you'll find yourself in the shade.
For the caves, thanks to Bobrunobo for his description, which enabled us to discover them.
At point 7, take the path to the right of the road for about 200 m. When you come to some large dead tree trunks that partially block the path, turn immediately left to cross the field of cherry trees and you'll soon see a yellow marking opposite.
We set off from point 1 to avoid having to walk back into the heat!
I'd love to do this walk again!

We did a very nice hike from Les Beylons, avoiding the road from Murs. You start off uphill, and the gentle descent after point 6 with its views over the valley and the Lubéron is very beautiful. The signs are clear and we had no trouble following them. As some hikers have already noted, you pass right next to the Bérigoule caves, so you can easily visit them, which adds about 45 minutes to the hike. To do this: about 200 m before arriving at Grande Blaque, just after a steep incline and at a telephone pole, look for a path that leads off into the woods on the right (marker: wooden pallet on the ground). Follow this path for about 10 minutes to reach a junction marked by a double blue arrow on a stone. Turn right down the path and follow it along a rock face that appears on the left. You will soon find the caves by following this wall. After visiting the caves, you can turn around to return to the circuit and return to La Grande Blaque. Also worth noting: between points 8 and 9 you pass a beautiful property, outside which runs a fountain, complete with pool and bench, offering a pleasant place to cool off and have a picnic if you wish.

Pleasant walk, well signposted except for the crossing of the field of cherry trees which we didn't find, so go all the way to the end and descend, you'll find a path that takes you back to the circuit.

A nice easy hike on a path that follows a contour (which is very rare for us) with a pretty view on one side.

A tip to help you find the place to go up to the Bérigoule caves: as well as a cairn on the right where you need to climb up, there's also a menhir in roughly the same place.

Thank you for this trail.

A lovely, well-described walk with superb views of the Vaucluse and Luberon mountains.
The only difficult part is the climb to Grande Blaque (point 6).
I agree with Nichou that the starting point should be changed.

Don't start from the village of MURS, but from point 1 in the description. This avoids walking along the road (there and back). The walk is then 2km shorter and virtually all the tarmac sections are removed.
You can park in a small car park on the right, just before point 1, before crossing the D15A.

We passed the caves without noticing any signs, as they are not indicated on the route. What a shame...
The visit to the hamlet of Les Vergiers was surprising...
We had an excellent afternoon.

Not mentioned in the itinerary is a must-see visit to the berigoule caves.

The Grottes de Bérigoule form a vast, deep network of galleries in a limestone outcrop to the north of the village. Since 1540, the lords and bishops of Provence have been waging war against the Waldensians of the Luberon, who are considered heretics. In April 1545, twenty-two villages, including Mérindol and Cabrières d'Avignon, were burnt down. Fleeing from the massacres in Cabrières and Lacoste, twenty-five Waldensian women and children fled to Murs, where the population had long supported the Waldensians, the parish priest himself had declared himself a Waldensian and the Bérarde farm had been home to the Serre family, a large Waldensian family, since the 15th century. They took refuge in the Bérigoule caves to the north of the village. During the week of 20 to 27 April, Captain Mormoiron, representative of the papal vice-legate in Avignon, learned of the presence of Waldensians in the Murs caves. At the entrance to the caves, he ordered muskets to be fired, but no-one came out. He then lit a fire to smoke out the looters, who all died of suffocation. Their mission accomplished, the soldiers from Mormoiron left the village, having decimated the herds grazing around the village. In retaliation, the inhabitants of Murs increased the number of attacks on Catholics in Malaucène, Carpentras and Joucas until the end of the Wars of Religion in 1595.
