Around Derwent water

Start: National Trust Great Wood car park, Borrowdale Rd, Keswick (CA12 5UP) Grid ref. NY 272 214

(S/E) Exit the car park, cross B5289 road, then cross the dry stone wall using the gap to find the footpath.

(1) Once you reach the footpath take left (South) in the direction of Derwent Water shore.

(2) Once at the shore, take left (South) to continue on the path still following the shore. It follows it for 1.8 Km before going on the B5289 road.

(3) Continue straight (South) either on the footpath by the shore or on the pavement along the B5289 (Derwent Water should always be on your right-hand side) for 1.2 Km until going past Lodore Falls Hotel.

(4) Just after the hotel, take right (West) to continue walking around Derwent Water (it should still be on your right-hand side). Walk towards Cannon Dub River. Cross it and continue straight on the main path to reach Great Bay and the West side of Derwent Water shore.

(5) Once on the West side of the shore, take right (North) at the path junction to join the Cumbria way path. Continue straight on the large path following Derwent Water shore for 900m, until reaching Otter Island.

(6) Take right at the intersections of paths to continue following the shore North. Continue straight until passing Hawse End Outdoor Centre on your left after 2.2 Km.

(7) Take right (North) at the intersection of paths to stay on the Cumbria way. Continue straight on this path for 1 Km until reaching the car park of Lingholm Estate.

(8) Take right at the end of the car park (stop following the Cumbria Way) to walk toward the shore and Galmire Bay. Continue along the shore until you reach Nichol End marina and the road.

(9) At the road, take right towards Portinscale (North). Continue on the road for 710m until reaching the big bend (after the Chalet Tearoom).

(10) At the road junction, take right on the Regional Rte 71 towards Derwentwater Hotel. Walk until the end of the road and cross the bridge.

(11) After 120m, Ttake the footpath on the right (East) still following the Cumbria Way path. Continue on this path for 900m until reaching the main road entering Keswick.

(12) Take right on the main road, still following the Cumbria Way. Continue straight on Main Street then straight on Market Square passing the visitor center.

(13) At the end of Market Square, take right on Lake Road.

(14) Then take right at the corner with George Fisher shop still staying on Lake road. Continue until the end of the road passing under the tunnel.

(15) Then take left on the main footpath (Keswick mini golf should be on your right-hand side).

(16) Continue straight on Lake Road using the pavement until reaching the Theatre by the Lake. Continue straight (South) in the direction of Friar's Crag until seeing a path junction.

(17) Take a left towards the shore of Derwent. Follow Derwent Water shore using the main footpath for 2 Km, until reaching Calfclose Bay.

(2) Take a left.

(1) Then right to cross the dry stone wall and the B5289 road to join the car park (S/E)

Terrain: Footpath along Derwent Water shore and roads. Be careful, between the waypoints (4) and (5) the path can be flooded.

Dog friendly: Yes, some section on roads

Alternative path: At waypoint (17) it is possible to go straight towards Friar's Crag and then take left and right to join again the path along the shore and the path to go to the car park .
