Remarkable trees of the royal hunts of Sénart

Some of these trees have probably seen the royal hunting parties pass by! This hike is partly like a treasure hunt. The remarkable trees are usually located a few dozen metres from the forest paths and require a little effort to discover. But the beauty of these specimens quickly makes you forget the difficulties. The route is further enhanced by passing close to two 18th-century castles.

Description of the walk

Departure from Évry-Val de Seine station (RER line D, on the section between Paris-Lyon and Corbeilles-Essonnes via Ris-Orangis).

(S/E) Exit the station on the "Seine" side, i.e. from the platform when coming from Paris (use the underground passage to cross the tracks if coming from Corbeil). Take Rue Robert Pissonnier, which runs alongside a stadium on the left, with an Asian restaurant on the right. Head towards the Seine (north-east).

(1) At the end of the street, in front of the Manouchian network memorial, take the path on the left that follows the road. Walk past the indoor tennis courts and follow the banks of the Seine to the lock. Take the footbridge to cross the river.

Once you reach the opposite bank, turn left and walk along the Seine for a few dozen metres. Then take the wide avenue lined with tall trees on the right. You will see the church of Soisy-sur-Seine ahead: head towards it. Be careful when crossing Boulevard de la République (D488), use the pedestrian crossings!

(2) Take Rue de l'Église, pass the municipal police station, then cross Rue Notre-Dame. Follow this street on the left until you reach a butcher's shop. Turn right onto Rue du Grand Veneur (steep). Walk up this street and, when you reach the bend, turn right into the grounds of the Château du Grand Veneur.

(3) Go around the château on the left, take the large path that runs between the pond and the north façade. Follow this path (lawns on the right and left) and enter a wooded area where you can admire superb specimens of maple, chestnut, beech and Corsican pine trees, etc. On the right-hand side is a rockery with a pond and grotto. Follow the avenue to the northern exit of the park.

(4) Use the pedestrian crossing to cross Rue de l'Ermitage and take Chemin de Brunoy. Pass a horse riding centre and, at the end of this street, turn right onto the path (green path) parallel to the bridle path. Follow it along the housing estate to an esplanade with a mini fitness trail.

(5) Take the sandy track that runs through the middle (north-east direction). At the end, cross the road using the pedestrian crossing, walk past a small building (EDF transformer station) and take the bridle path, leaving the bus stop on your right. Continue along the golf course. A forest barrier marks the entrance to the Forêt de Sénart.

Yellow-red markings (GRP®)

(6) When you reach the first crossroads (clearing on the right), take the path on the left (GRP®). Walk along the golf course on your left until you reach a tarmac road. On the left: the Poste aux Lièvres forest house. Turn right onto the road and walk about 20 metres until you see our first remarkable tree on the left-hand side (identified by a blue dot on the trunk).

(7) Retrace your steps and take theGRP® on the right. Twenty metres further on, on the right, a post indicates that there used to be a remarkable oak tree, of which only the stump remains. Continue to an intersection with a signpost. Go straight ahead (towards Draveil - Ris Orangis), ignoring the various paths leading off to the right and left.
When you reach a paved road (Route de Soisy, Carrefour de Paris), on the right is a pond with the stump of a pollarded willow (a former remarkable tree). Follow the road to the left (without crossing it) and take the first lane on the left. After about 450 metres, you will see a second remarkable tree.

(8) Continue in the same direction.

No signposts

Take the first lane on the right. Cross the Soisy road and continue straight ahead until you reach a fork (Carrefour du Solitaire). Take the right-hand branch and, just before the next crossroads (Carrefour de la Justice), take the path that branches off to the right (due south). After about 150m on the right: the third remarkable tree (photo).

(9) Retrace your steps, return to the previous path, and at the crossroads (Carrefour de la Justice) turn left into a very wide lane. At the next crossroads, turn right, and after about 100 metres take the track slanting to the left. Cross the first crossroads (de Maupertuy), continue to the next one (Carrefour de la Mare aux Rats). The fourth remarkable tree is on the left.

Return to the centre of the crossroads and take the lane to the right (south-east) of the previous path. Follow this lane for about 800 metres until you reach a white road, then turn left. After about 450 metres, cross over a ditch (Ru Madereau), and just after that, on the left in the woods 30 metres away, you will find our fifth tree (photo).

(11) Return to the forest road and continue in the same direction. When you reach the Orléans crossroads, take the third lane on the right (tarmac for 250 metres). Ignore the cycle path, then the next two lanes. When you reach the crossroads (Carrefour du Grand Veneur), take the first right (acute angle). Tree no. 6 is about 200 metres away on the right.

(12) Continue along this path until the next crossroads, then turn left. 400 metres ahead on the right is the next remarkable tree.

(13) Continue until you reach a paved road, which you take on the right. Ignore a lane, then take a road diagonally to the left, which leads to the Château de la Faisanderie.

(14) The esplanade in front of the château has picnic tables where you can take a break, as well as a drinking fountain.
With the château behind you, take the second tarmac road on the right. When you reach the Mare du Diable crossroads, admire the eighth tree.

(15) Ignore the various tarmac roads and take the lane heading south-east. Ignore the various paths and lanes and continue to the Tour crossroads (where five lanes converge). Take the first track on the right, then immediately take the small bridge on the right and follow the path that leads to remarkable tree no. 9.

(16) Take the path in the opposite direction and head towards the crossroads at the Tower. After crossing the small bridge, take the lane on the right. About 100 metres to the left, cross the ditch and follow a small path for about 30 metres, which leads to the last remarkable tree on this walk.

(17): Return to the lane and continue south-west. Ignore the various paths and continue to a large clearing with a white forest road. Turn left. Follow this road straight ahead, passing a gas substation with a bucolic fresco, and ignore the perpendicular forest road.

Yellow-red markings

(18) At the next crossroads, rejoin theGRP® and follow it to the right. When you reach a forest barrier, turn right; at the next T-junction, turn left. The path crosses the golf course, then follows the fence on the right, to the left of the houses. Walk along the walls of a cemetery, then pass in front of the tennis courts. Use the pedestrian crossing to cross Rue du Vieux Chemin de Paris.

(19) Walk downhill for about 15 metres, take the small path on the right, and enter a housing estate. Walk down Rue Charles Le Normand. At the bottom, turn right, then left at the next street (Avenue Louise de France). Go around the esplanade and turn right onto Avenue du Château. Cross the roundabout and, at the next fork, take the right-hand branch which leads to a path. Follow this path which leads to the RD448.
Beware of heavy traffic!

(20) Use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road. Turn right onto the pavement, then cross the D93 opposite the shopping centre (pedestrian crossing). Turn left towards the Seine. Cross the bridge, then take the road on the right to reach the Manouchian memorial.

(1) Turn left onto Rue Robert Pissonnier to reach the station (S/E).

Notes

Access:
By RER line D (sections between Paris-Lyon and Corbeil-Essonnes, via Ris-Orangis). Please note: from Paris, only ROVO trains.
By car, use the station car park.

This hike does not require any special equipment, as it follows exclusively forest paths and roads, with no trails except when approaching the trees.
The Sénart Forest is damp (800 ponds), and after a rainy period some paths may be muddy.
You can picnic (tables + drinking water) opposite the Château de la Faisanderie.

Numbering of plots in the Sénart Forest
This has been changed recently, so the plot numbers shown are the new ones (ONF map from late 2016), not the ones on the IGN map, which haven't been updated yet.

Remarkable trees
They are identified by the ONF with a blue dot on the trunk and often have a post about 1 metre high with various information (species, size, etc.).
The UTM coordinates of each tree are provided so that they can be located on the IGN map.
A GPS device may be useful to facilitate location.

Worth a visit

I knew some of the trees, but this hike allowed me to learn about others.
A very nice initiative.

There were beautiful trees all along the route, but several of those indicated had disappeared or been cut down (only the signs and stumps remained).

A beautiful route through this forest that I am rediscovering. Some sections are slightly busier than others, but for the most part there was no one there on this Wednesday with pleasant temperatures, which allowed me to observe the local wildlife, including a doe, two roe deer and black woodpeckers at close range. It's worth noting the water source at La Faisanderie, which is handy for avoiding having to carry water. A few trees are on the ground (burnt oak), but many are still standing tall and magnificent.
Thank you for this hike!

Good evening,
The pear tree is 50 metres from the forest house. It is the first tree on the left after the sign describing the various trails marked in white, red, etc.
It doesn't look like much, but it has a blue circle identifying it as a remarkable tree.
Best regards.

A very small part of the circuit completed one afternoon, starting from the forest house at the hare post and ending near the pheasantry, then returning directly, searching for points 7 to 12...
It got off to a bad start because the pear tree at point 7 remained elusive despite a thorough search of the surrounding area.
Then everything went well until tree 10, which was also not found.
The treasure hunt remains motivating and will therefore continue later for the rest of the circuit..

Please note that the lock footbridge is closed until 31/08/21. A sign indicates this near the Manouchian monument. For those who are not paying attention, the return trip to the lock can be somewhat frustrating...you must therefore take the bridge and then the towpath on the right bank to reach the centre of Soisy. The walk is pleasant. Remarkable trees are usually marked with posts. Some trees are on the ground... The Senard forest is flat and exploited. The paths are therefore wide and straight. This can create a certain monotony.

Very beautiful route. Well done for noting the location of the trees (even if some have been cut down). The route is very well described and allows you to see different aspects of the forest. Finally, discovering the castle and the Grand Veneur park remains a very fond memory. It is very pleasant to walk through the park and stroll around. Beautiful view of the castle from the park.
Excellent!

There are a few minor errors regarding the position of the trees... I believe that tree no. 6 in particular is a little further away than indicated on the website.
The next tree has been felled... it is still there but it is lodged on the ground in pieces... it's still impressive though!

We wasted quite a bit of time locating some of the trees and missed one or two... which isn't a big deal because the hike is very pleasant and we saw plenty of them anyway!!! Very impressive!... You feel so small next to these giants of Nature and Life!
Thank you very much for this hike!

This route should be AVOIDED for hiking, for three reasons: 1) It is overrun with mountain bikes and you have to step aside very frequently to let them pass. 2) There are numerous passages along the edges of residential areas. 3) The vast majority of the route is on wide, straight dirt or tarmac paths, which are uninteresting. You have to wait until km 18 to find a small path through the trees

We decided to shorten this hike by starting from La Faisanderie and taking a shortcut between points 17 and 6, which makes for an easy 11 km loop. The search for remarkable trees adds an extra incentive to this walk, even if they are exclusively oaks (we did not find the pear tree (7), but on rereading previous posts, it appears to be incorrectly located on the circuit). At 10, the oak tree has unfortunately been cut down, but we can still appreciate the diameter of the trunk, which was still on the ground during our walk.
Thank you for this circuit.

I did it twice, one week apart. The Sénart forest is flat with long straight stretches, the route is well laid out, and you change direction often, which means the "landscape" changes quite frequently. You go from oak trees to conifers to birch trees. Yes, there is mud in places, but you can get around it.
The search for remarkable trees adds a nice touch to this walk.

Access to Grand Veneur Park is currently prohibited following the storm on 10 June 2018. Only access to the media library (castle) is permitted (text of the municipal decree posted at all park entrances). You must therefore use the pavement along the park wall to reach Rue de l'Ermitage.
The remarkable trees are mainly a pretext for us to discover the Sénart forest.
The walk is easy now that most of the paths are dry.
There is a slight problem crossing the housing estate at the end of the route. The street on the right at the bottom of Rue Charles Le Normand is Avenue du Château and the next street on the left has no nameplate.
