A big thank you for the guide to this magnificent circular route – it was a great help as we found very few routes in the Picos de Europa National Park!
A quick update on our experience, in case it helps others: we completed this circular route over 4.5 days, camping and self-catering, in the opposite direction to the suggested route (to ensure better weather at the start of the trip), broken down as follows:
- Day 1: Poncebos – Piccu Urriellu Refuge, camped at the refuge (sites available)
- Day 2: Piccu Urriellu Refuge – Cabaña Veronica – Collado Jermoso Refuge – descent almost to the valley with a camp just above Cordinanes (we didn’t encounter any particularly tricky sections on the descent, although part of it is secured)
- Day 3: Cordinanes – Vegabaño Refuge – Vega Huerta Refuge, campsite approximately 2 km past the refuge, at a pass (we’ve had better
)
- Day 4: Onwards to the Vegarredonda refuge – Vega de Ario refuge, camped at the refuge (pitches available)
Day 5: Return to Poncebos via the Trema Gorge and the Cares Route
With this itinerary, the bulk of the difficulty lies in stages 1 and 2, which must be undertaken in dry weather!
