Description of the walk

Park in the centre of the village of Beyssac.

(S/E) Take the Route de Pompadour, which continues to the right as the Route de Beyssac. Join the D7 road.

(1) Follow it to the right as far as Eyparsac.

(2) Turn right at the three-way junction and follow the road, which turns into a track, straight ahead through the woodland. At the three-way junction, continue to the right. Reach the D7E2 junction.

(3) Cross it and continue straight ahead. Pass the Étang de Mas road and cross the ford (small bridge on the right) to the road. Head straight ahead towards the Bois Redon and follow the path running alongside the meadow.

(4) Continue straight on and cross the road. Carry on straight ahead to Grange Vieille.

(5) Take the path on the left at the first house. Continue straight ahead across the meadow, then, at the far end, follow the fence to the left. When you reach the tarmac path, turn right, then left after the gate of the house. At the junction, turn left to reach Étang de la Rechèze.

(6) Cross the ford at the pond (small bridge on the right) then take the path on the right (sign: residents only). Walk alongside a larch plantation then continue on the widest path, leaving the one on the left. Reach the stream and take the path on the left. When you reach the road, turn right behind the hedge.

(7) Then follow the path on the left to walk alongside the Ancienne Chartreuse de Glandier.

(8) Just before the car park entrance, take the path that climbs up to the right towards a house. Walk alongside the fence. At the top of the hill, turn left where the fence ends, continue straight on (house at the end of the path) to reach La Grange Vieille. On the road, turn right into the village.

(5) Continue straight on to the left. At the junction, continue straight on along the road and, at the crossroads, straight on into the orchards.

(4) At the edge of the orchards, take the first small path on the left to the road, follow it to the right, then immediately left.
Continue straight on to the village of La Mazelle. At the crossroads in the village, turn left towards Beyssac and cross the hamlet of Porte-lettres towards Beyssac. Follow Rue du Soleil Levant to the right and join the main road and the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

At the start or finish: the church was built, or rather rebuilt, on the orders of Pope Innocent VI, a native of Beyssac (1352–1362), during his papal reign. Pope Innocent VI oversaw the reconstruction of this church from 1352 to 1362. It is a very simple building, reflecting the character of this pope, a determined reformer who began by tackling the Curia’s lavish lifestyle and tightening the purse strings of the cardinals.
The Head of the Church was born in Beyssac towards the end of the13th century; Étienne Aubert was a professor of law in Toulouse in 1335. Bishop of Noyon, then of Clermont, he was made a cardinal by Clement VI in 1342. Having become Dean of the Sacred College, he was elected Pope on 18 December 1352. He died on 12 September 1362. He had founded the Collège Saint-Martial in Toulouse for schoolchildren from Limousin.

In Eyparsac, at the Jardins d’Ordesa, Dominique and Isabelle, nursery owners and landscape gardeners, have also created an educational garden, accredited since 2014 by the Corrèze Chamber of Agriculture.
At La Grange Vieille, make the most of your visit to discover the pottery workshop named after the hamlet: Xavier and Claire will enthusiastically show you around their business.
Admire the Chartreuse de Glandier, a site with architecture unique to the Limousin region, which has served in turn as a Carthusian monastery, a forge and the setting for the “Lafarge Affair”.
Nearby, you can visit the Monts site, which was one of the branches of the Pompadour National Stud Farm where Limousin cattle breeding was developed, or the Domaine de la Rivière, the former mare stud of the Pompadour National Stud, where the Anglo-Arabian breed was established—long a flagship of Arabian and Anglo-Arabian breeding (now privately owned).
At the end of your walk, enjoy the enchanting setting of Étoile de Pompadour, formerly Club Med, now transformed into a luxury hotel.

This path has been closed by a local by-law following landslides along the canal. We tried walking it anyway; it’s passable, but the route isn’t clearly marked, and we got lost several times. It’s a shame, as the area is beautiful and the woodland path is lovely.

The signposting from Beyssac to the Chartreuse de Glandier is good, but there aren’t enough markers between the blue signs?
The return route was very poorly signposted; we found a closed path but it was a lovely walk

The signposts and directions aren’t always great. You’re more than likely to get lost in the forest. As you leave the Chartreuse, before entering the forest, turn around to catch a bird’s-eye view of the Chartreuse.
