Fontfroide Abbey: from La Croix to the Chemin de l’Aragnon

A circular route, not too difficult, starting from Fontfroide Abbey offering lovely views. The route is varied as it follows paths that are sometimes stony, tracks, and also a section of the Via Domitia.
All in all, a short hike that is a bit of a workout in places but remains enjoyable.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Fontfroide Abbey.

(S/E) Head towards the entrance to this former Cistercian monastery.

(1) Go through the large gate when it opens (10am) and follow a track until you reach a right-hand bend.

(2) Take the hairpin bend to the left onto a path leading up to the Cross, signposted by a directional sign. You will reach a fork in the path before the final climb.

(3) Head up the path to the right, which winds its way up; it is grassy at first but gradually becomes stony until you reach the Abbey Cross.

(4) After stopping at this spot, which offers a remarkable 360° view, retrace your steps back to the previous fork.

(3) Turn right to follow a path downhill, which leads to an uncultivated field.

(5) Cross it for a few metres before reaching a cross-country track.

(6) Continue along this track to the right, leaving a path on your left, and cross a bridge over the Ruisseau de la Quille, which is very often dry. Continue along the track, ignoring all paths or tracks to the right or left, until, after almost 2 km, you reach a junction with another track of similar width.

(7) Follow it to the right until you reach a junction where you will see a gently sloping path on the right, which you should ignore.

(8) Retrace your steps for a few metres and take the path on the right, which is part of the Via Domitia. This covered path is stony as it follows a stream, but becomes much more pleasant once it leaves the stream. Continue along this path, ignoring another path on the left, until you find a new covered path a little further on to the right.

(9) Follow it, even though it tends to narrow and climb, until it opens out onto an open path.

(10) Join a track called "Chemin de l'Aragnon".

(11) Take this on the right and continue to a crossroads.

(12) Then follow the track, continuing on, which descends into the Combe du Moulin towards the car park at the start. Near the finish, there is another closed gate, which you should go round by veering left to take a small path used by walkers, leading to (S/E).

Notes

Start from the car park, walking clockwise, through the Abbey, but with one restriction: you must wait for the large gate to open at 10am.

As the route is only partially signposted, we recommend using the Visorando app or a hiking GPS to follow the trail more easily.

You must avoid days when wild boar hunting is taking place and also rainy days.

Worth a visit

After crossing the Abbey, take the path up to the Cross, where there is a remarkable 360° viewpoint.

My review is the fourth or fifth one. My friends and I did this route on 31 March 2025. We had a brilliant time, especially as the weather was lovely and there was no wind. As we set off around 10 am, the 3,000 participants in the Ultra Trail didn’t bother us too much. (They’d set off at the crack of dawn.)

The route was altered at the start due to building work at the Abbey (access closed). We had a bit of trouble getting the walk started. After a long detour, we got back on track. Magnificent views, especially from the cross. The path leading up to it is quite steep, but well worth the effort. A few steep sections on the rest of the walk, but manageable. A magnificent walk. At the end of the walk, a gate with ‘No Entry, Private’ written on it (to be checked). Some very friendly donkeys spotted as we finished the walk.

We really enjoyed ourselves, especially in the upper section where the views are magnificent. The only problem – for which you are in no way to blame – was that we happened to be there on the very day the national Ultra-Trail race, counting towards the French championship, was taking place. There were over 1,000 cars and 3,000 to 4,000 people. We still managed to go for a walk amongst the runners and everything went well (surprisingly).

We didn’t see many people at that time of year, but as the abbey is well-known, I imagine it must be quite different during the tourist season. In any case, it’s best to avoid the summer as it’s not a shaded walk. The abbey site is superb, with a lovely view from the cross; the rest of the walk is fine, nothing more. It’s an easy trail with little elevation gain apart from the climb to the cross. There are a few signposts, but they’re poorly maintained, so a GPS and the Visorando app are essential if you don’t want to go the wrong way!

Please note: the starting point from Fontfroide Abbey has changed: access is now closed. You must go via the ticket office (you do not need to buy a ticket) and then through the shop. The starting point is on the left, leading up to the cross

The only problem was that the Abbey gate was closed, so we walked up towards the mill
following the fence and turned left to join the path leading up to the cross, going round
the abbey.

A lovely little walk, though the signposting is virtually non-existent, which is a real shame! Some stunning views. The route wasn’t very busy at this time of year.
