This short, flat walk is easy to do with children. It can be broken up with activities, but be aware there are no railings on the north side of the pier.

Description of the walk

(S/E) South Promenade Car Park/Dragon Car Park (Overflow Car Park)

  1. If in the Dragon (Overflow) Car Park, cross the road to Minchella's Ice Cream Parlour. IF in the South Promenade Car Park walk to the north end of the car park to Minchella's.
  2. Continue walking until you reach the concrete Sandhaven Beach marker and turn right onto the beach footpath (1) .
  3. Turn left and continue walking towards the fairground, either on the promenade footpath or on the beach (2).
  4. Walk around the back of the fairground to the Watch House (3) and turn right onto the pier.
  5. Walk along the pier to the lighthouse (4), if the weather is bad you may find the gates shut, and need to turn back here.
  6. Retrace your steps back to the car park.

There are toilets behind Minchella's and at the fairground, there are also takeaways, pubs and restaurants along the promende. There is a large shelter with seating behind Minchella's good for eating a packed lunch on a wet and windy day.

This then turns to a narrower footpath at Marsden roundabout, however there is an alternative pavement along the road for those who need a flatter surface.The route then passes Marsden Grotto and final arrives at Souter Lighthouse.
