In the shadow of the Florimont towers

A very pleasant walk to discover the village of Florimont and its surroundings in the lush countryside.
At the end, I suggest a short alternative route to reach the foot of the two towers.
Florimont is situated in the foothills of the Jura, 30 km from Belfort and a stone’s throw from Switzerland.
The route is marked with a Green Ring

Description of the walk

Start at the car park opposite the church. The route is marked with a Green Ring.
A sign describing the route is located at the northern end of the car park.

(S/E) Walk along the north-east side of the car park, turn right onto Rue du Cimetière and then left onto Rue Principale towards Delle.
At the junction, turn right towards Courtelevant - Faverois. Be sure to read the manuscript recounting the legend of the mill. At the Coeuvatte bridge, continue along Rue Principale and go straight on until you reach the wayside shrine.

(1) The route splits into two. Turn slightly right until you reach the main road.
Follow the D463 to the left towards Faverois for 70m. Take care.

(2) Take the path on the right for about 400m and, at the fork, continue to the right for about 1km.

(3) Turn left across the fields. You will see a pond in the distance on the right. Continue to the “Au repos du sanglier” hut.

(4) At the junction, follow the path to the left for about 250m (altitude 407m) then turn right for 700m.
When you reach the junction, turn left. When you reach the eco-point, veer left along the edge of the forest and continue to the D463

(5) Cross the D463 with care, then turn left along the road and take the small path running alongside it. Return to the D463 and continue along it for about 300m, following the signposts (altitude 386m).
Turn right onto a small path that joins Rue de Faverois. You will reach the sign marking the entrance to the village of Florimont. Follow Rue de Faverois to the crossroads.

(1) Turn left, cross the Vendeline stream and, further on, the Coeuvatte stream. Continue left along Rue Principale for 40m. Turn right onto Rue du Cimetière, where you can admire the beautiful well.

(6) From here, you have two options: return to the nearby car park or take a short climb to admire the two towers. The route is no longer signposted but is well worth the effort.
Climb the steps and enter the cemetery, where you can admire the first tower. Please respect the peace and quiet of the place.
Continue up the steps leading to the second tower.
Head back down and turn right onto Rue du Cimetière. Turn left onto the small path that leads back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Start: at the car park opposite the church on Rue Principale, 90100 Florimont.

The local council has recently installed steps and made the area around the second tower safer. This is why I have suggested an alternative route that is not signposted.

The trail is marked with a Green Ring.
Visorando was provided with information by Mr Chevalley, a volunteer member of Balisage90, based on the leaflets published by the Sud-Territoire Community of Communes.

Worth a visit

Let’s set off to explore Florimont.

The site of Florimont, which commands two important strategic passes between the Vosges and the Jura, has been occupied since ancient times by Roman troops, who built a watchtower there.
In 915, the region was ravaged by the Hungarian invasion. A fief of the Bishop of Basel, Florimont was assigned to the Counts of Ferrette.

Upon the death of the last count, the lordship passed, through the marriage of Jeanne de Ferrette, to the House of Habsburg. The Habsburgs sold or exchanged the rights, and lords succeeded one another until the Thirty Years’ War.

In 1684, the Barbaud family became the owners of Florimont. Having fallen into ruin, they ceded their seigneurial rights to the Barons of Ferrette in 1785, but during the Revolution, all these properties were sold at auction as national property.
The coat of arms of Florimont still appears on the pediment of the town hall and school.
Florimont is a beautiful village nestled between two rivers. It is surrounded by vast forests and a multitude of ponds, a delight for hunters, anglers and walkers alike. It enjoys a privileged location on the borders of Alsace and Switzerland. The forest paths offer long and magnificent walks, from which, in certain spots, one can admire the Vosges mountain range.

Florimont Tower

When the Count of Reiset purchased the former Florimont Castle, he had this keep rebuilt. The original castle had been built in the 13th century by the Counts of Ferrette, who had recognised the strategic importance of the village, situated both on the Belfort Pass and on the route to the Ajoie Basin. After the Thirty Years’ War, the lords of Florimont no longer lived there, and the building fell into ruin.

A lovely walk in 23–24°C weather with partly cloudy skies – which was just as well, as there were plenty of open stretches. We extended the route from point 4 to reach the Prévôt pond, where we stopped for a snack. There are benches and tables there. Florimont is a pretty little village with its two towers.

A short walk that’s particularly worth doing for the village, its tower, its streams and its legend.
