Waypoints

  1. S : km 0 - alt. 37 m
  2. 1 : km 0 - alt. 37 m - Leave Guildford station via the main, platform 2b, exit end bear right along the station approach towards the town.
  3. 2 : km 0.09 - alt. 35 m - Cross the road (Walnut Tree Close) at the light-controlled crossing and follow the pavement on the far side to your right, signposted for pedestrians to the 'Town Centre'.
  4. 3 : km 0.13 - alt. 35 m - Bear left into Bridge Street and continue forward, over the river bridge, and on until you get to the light controlled pedestrian crossing.
  5. 4 : km 0.26 - alt. 32 m - Cross at the lights and bear right along the pavement past the taxi rank.
  6. 5 : km 0.38 - alt. 32 m - Bear left into North Street and, at a convenient point, cross to the pavement on the right-hand side of the road.
  7. 6 : km 0.47 - alt. 36 m - There are many opportunities for refreshments between here and the Castle Grounds; cafes, restaurants, wine bars, pubs and street stalls. There are also notable buildings, sculptures and other points of interest to look out for; in fact, too many to mention here. If you have access, you will find much information on-line and the Tourist Information Office is located on the High Street. We will pass close by, shortly.
  8. 7 : km 0.54 - alt. 39 m - Pass several alley ways between the shops on your right until you find Angel Gate. This is a narrow, cobbled alleyway opposite 'All Bar One'. Walk up Angel Gate.
  9. 8 : km 0.66 - alt. 44 m - At the top end of Angel Gate, you will emerge onto the High Street. Turn left.
  10. 9 : km 0.77 - alt. 50 m - Continue up the High Street towards the prominent clock that overhangs the pavement on your left. Immediately opposite the clock, is an impressive arch supported on four columns. This is Tunsgate. Go though the arch and up the pedestrianised road beyond. (Note: The Tourist Information Office is a little way beyond the clock, on the left hand side.)
  11. 10 : km 0.85 - alt. 55 m - Seats
  12. 11 : km 0.9 - alt. 56 m - At the top of Tunsgate, cross the road (Castle Street) and go straight ahead along the little road to the right of the March Hare pub.
  13. 12 : km 0.92 - alt. 57 m - At the end of the pub wall, bear left into the Castle Grounds. You may be able to spot the bowling green, ahead.
  14. 13 : km 0.95 - alt. 57 m - At the bowling green, bear left and skirt round the green to the far right hand corner. - Seats
  15. 14 : km 1.09 - alt. 55 m - At the end of the far side of the bowling green, follow the path right to drop down and through an underpass to emerge at the foot of Guildford Castle.
  16. 15 : km 1.13 - alt. 53 m - Come out of the underpass and turn left.
  17. 16 : km 1.19 - alt. 48 m - Bear left to exit the Castle Grounds.
  18. 17 : km 1.23 - alt. 45 m - Bear right and then cross the road (Castle Hill) to go up the steps ahead into Castle Cliffe Gardens. Take care, traffic on Castle Hill can approach quite suddenly from around the bend to your left.
  19. 18 : km 1.31 - alt. 48 m - Exit the gardens via the path at the far corner and continue along the path.
  20. 19 : km 1.38 - alt. 46 m - At the end of the path, descend the stairs and then bear left over the grass and up the hill to the hedge at the far side.
  21. 20 : km 1.45 - alt. 47 m - Exit through the right hand gap in the trees towards a modern, white house, and follow the path beside the house to the road.
  22. 21 : km 1.49 - alt. 49 m - At the end of the path, go up the steps and turn right (Abbot Road.) This almost immediately becomes a track. Continue along the track.
  23. 22 : km 1.64 - alt. 44 m - At the end of the track, turn right (into Great Quarry) and descend along the pavement on the far side to the main road.
  24. 23 : km 1.69 - alt. 34 m - Cross the main road. Take care; this is a busy road with no central refuge.
  25. 24 : km 1.7 - alt. 33 m - On the far side of the road, take the path to your left, leading off the Guildford Boat Club car park.
  26. 25 : km 1.74 - alt. 32 m - In about 20 yards, turn sharp right and follow the path which will lead you to the navigation. (Do not go through the gate into the meadow)
  27. 26 : km 1.81 - alt. 31 m - Continue forward along the path beside the navigation. The path is uneven here with exposed tree routes and, occasionally, the mooring lines of boats across the path. Take care.
  28. 27 : km 2.19 - alt. 31 m - Go through the gate and keep forward to the far right-hand corner of the meadow.
  29. 28 : km 2.33 - alt. 31 m - In the corner of the meadow, go through the gate and continue through the woodland following the line of the navigation.
  30. 29 : km 2.49 - alt. 31 m - When you catch sight of the footbridge over the navigation a short way ahead, turn left, away from the navigation.
  31. 30 : km 2.7 - alt. 33 m - Pass through the gate and turn right to skirt the sports field keeping the woodland on your right.
  32. 31 : km 3.02 - alt. 34 m - Join the surfaced path, bearing right into the woodland.
  33. 32 : km 3.18 - alt. 33 m - The path emerges into a small car park. Go straight ahead, across the car park, keeping the church on your left and the water processing plant on your right. Don't turn left opposite the entrance to the water processing plant, but keep forward to find a path that exits the car park at the far end.
  34. 33 : km 3.36 - alt. 33 m - Follow the path for approximately 100 yards and then turn right though a metal gate and into the riverside meadow. Once through the gate, bear left to follow the path across the meadow. (Note: A number of paths meander through the meadow in a southerly direction following the general line of the river. It does not really matter which you take but the route described is probably the most attractive and easy going. If you get lost and find yourself at a boardwalk, turn left to follow the boardwalk.)
  35. 34 : km 3.48 - alt. 32 m - When you emerge into a grassy area beside a bend in the river, continue forward, Ignore the path immediately on the left and, in about 20 yards, bear left to follow the path that goes slightly up hill, curving to the right between the trees.
  36. 35 : km 3.8 - alt. 38 m - At the end of the path, turn left to ascend some very rough/broken steps to the metal gate at the top of the hill.
  37. 36 : km 3.84 - alt. 45 m - At the top of the hill, go through the gate and turn right along the track.

  43. 42 : km 5.49 - alt. 35 m - After the bridge, go forward along the well surfaced path. As you near the main road, turn right and then right again onto a road (Trunley Heath Road.)
  44. 43 : km 6.63 - alt. 34 m - Follow Trunley Heath Road for a little over half a mile and pass the entrance to Thames Water on your left. At the river, do not go over the bridge but turn left (Unstead Lane.)
  45. 44 : km 6.69 - alt. 35 m - In a few yards, pass a metal gate and, almost immediately, take the footpath into the field on your right. Follow the footpath to the far left hand corner of the field.
