William Felkin, born here in 1795, a framework knitter or stockinger, became mayor of Nottingham and a respected historian. He recalled that ‘the streets were dirty and unpaved’ and ‘noted the ‘squalid wretchedness of their abodes’, many ‘little better than huts inside or outside.
