Park in the small village of Stanton Prior.
(S/E) Start from the church of St Lawrence in an easterly direction, bearing left and then walk about 200 metres to pick up a marked footpath, going straight up a steep hill. Continue on this footpath via a dog leg until you reach a wooded area. Turn 90 degrees right for about 100 metres then immediately left to enter the wooded area. NB. there are numerous tracks here but as long as you reach a clearing within a few minutes, you cannot go wrong. Keep to the left of this clearing and pick up footpath signs meandering down through the wood and on leaving the wood make for the A39.
(1) Cross this busy road to the footpath directly opposite. Visibility to cross here is good in both directions. Continue along this footpath across fields for just over 1km, admiring the open views on your right towards Bath. Aim for two houses as the footpath is not clear when crops are removed.
Turn right after you go through a metal kissing gate. Unfortunately, you need to walk for 150 metres on the road, but there is a pavement after a short while on the opposite side. Turn first left into the road into Burnett, then immediately right past the Manor House. There is an interesting church on your right but is usually closed during weekdays. 50 metres beyond the church as the road bears right take a footpath on your left up a lane. by "The War Cottage". Climb this for about 100 metres and at the top turn left - the footpath is marked as a diversion. Keep on the footpath in the same direction and follow it down past two copses. There are good open views on this path. You stay on this path for about 600 metres, climbing up to pass the second copse and then through an open field.
(3) Take care at the bottom of this field where several paths meet. Turn sharp left to follow the River Chew. This is NOT a public footpath shown on OS maps. Keep close to the river and go through a break in the hedge/tree line to cross a small stream after about 400 metres to continue along the River Chew, Follow the path to a corner of a field which slopes down from your left, crossing a wooden footbridge through a small wooded area. Follow the sign-posted path to the road in Compton Dando after passing through a few gates and a private garden where there is a permissive path,
(4) At the road turn right then immediately left as the church comes into view. You could stop at the Compton Inn for well earned refreshments! Continuing a short distance to the Village Hall then turn left up a footpath. Carry on up a steep hill for about 250 metres until you reach a choice of footpaths. Unfortunately the most direct on this route is impossible to see as the directional signs are poor. So I recommend you turn left towards the red barn and then turning right onto a metalled road (Bathford Hill). Follow this for about 200 metres then turn right down a track to Tucking Mill. which you reach in about 500 metres. Walk by the stream and as soon as you pick up a road turning left uphill lookout for the marked footpath on your right. It is not easy to spot!
(5) Follow this path as marked along a brook and line of trees until you reach a farm, Keep the farm buildings to your right until you reach a metalled road. Follow this up to Marksbury. Go more or less straight on through Marksbury for a short while until you reach the A39.
(6) Turn right but soon after lookout for a signed public footpath on the left of the road (A39), just before the church. Follow this footpath through wood then more or less straight across two fields. On entering the next field head left to the metal farm gate. Pass through this gate following the road right and past Church Farm until you reach St Lawrence Church where you started.(S/E)
