Grim's Ditch: There are several stretches of the linear earthworks known as 'Grim's Ditch' in the Chilterns. On this stretch the ditch is up to 3.5 metres wide and 2 metres deep with a bank of 2 metres and an overall spread of 13.5 metres. The ditch is believed to date from the iron age, but its purpose is unclear. It may have been a local boundary to control the movement of cattle and carts. The way the banks have been constructed does not suggest a defensive function.
