Windsor to Maidenhead

This is the seventh stage of the multi-day route "Railways and Waterways, between Oxford and London".

This walk passes Windsor Castle, then meanders through the water meadows, past a lonely church and the Olympic Rowing Lake, before visiting the well-known village of Bray, then following the Cut into Maidenhead.

This is a short stage, so there is plenty of time to watch the changing of the guard, from 10.45 Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and to have a look at the Eton College Olympic rowing lake.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Railways and Waterways, between Oxford and London

Description of the walk

Start: Windsor Central Station (SU 967 768)

(S) From the station entrance, turn left and continue round the castle and across the road to the bridge connecting Windsor with Eton.

(1) Cross the river and turn left at the Thames Path sign down Brocas Street. Keep left to reach the riverbank.
There is a good retrospective view of Windsor Castle.

(3) Keep following the riverbank.
Option: A shortcut may be taken here to the bend in the river.

(4) Cross the bridge.
Shortly come to ‘Athens’, a former bathing place for Eton schoolboys. They had strict instructions not to scandalise the ladies on the passing pleasure boats.
Continue past the Windsor Racecourse across the river and come to Boveney lock.

(5) A little further on is the redundant 12th Century St Mary Magdelene Church.
The Church was taken over by the Friends of Friendless Churches and restored by various charities.

(6) Continue along the riverbank for another two miles, where a footpath on the right leads to the Eton College Olympic rowing lake, known as Dorney Lake.

(7) Follow the riverbank and very soon leave the towpath and cross the footbridge over the river.
There is a good view of Monkey Island.

(8) At the path junction, turn right on the footpath, which becomes a lane leading to a bridge over the M4.

(9) Continue along the road leading into Bray and follow the road round to the left. Bear right on the minor road, then turn right on the main road. Pass the Hinds Head and turn left on the next track, the Green Way.

(10) Cross two footbridges, one across the Cut and the next over a minor waterway.

(11) At the junction with the road, turn right, then left on cycleway 4.
Option: At the next path junction, there is the option of continuing along the cycleway to the left.
Turn right and go along the Cut.

(12) The path veers away from the Cut and rejoins the cycleway at the other end of the nature reserve. Turn right to keep on the Green Way to the road, cross at the traffic lights and continue left on the Green Way.

(13) Turn right to leave it at the next road junction. Turn left, bear left at the main road, then cross the road at the traffic lights to reach Maidenhead Station.(E)
