Old hilltop village and Aubres waterfall

This short walk allows you to discover the old hilltop village of Aubres and the Ravin de Cougoir waterfall. The trails and paths offer superb views of the Baronnies Provençales mountains. The return journey, along quiet little roads running alongside streams, takes us to a beautiful waterfall, which is particularly spectacular in winter and after heavy rain.

Description of the walk

Coming from Nyons on the Route de Gap, park on the left, after the bakery, on Place du Mopas or in the car park just behind it.

(S/E) From the car park, take Route de Gap (D94) on the right towards Nyons. Turn right at the next street, which climbs steeply.

(1) At the last house at the end of the cul-de-sac, continue up the path that climbs to the left of the building (path visible on the OSM Trails map). This very narrow path, although maintained and partly secured, climbs up the hillside. Please be careful. When you reach Chemin de La Coste, continue climbing to the left. At the junction with Chemin de la Font du Pain, climb left over the rock to the cross to reach the viewpoint . Magnificent 360-degree panorama of the Eygues valley and the village below, the Montagne d'Essaillon opposite and the mountains of the Baronnies Provençales.

(2) Carefully climb down the rock and then go up to the village via the cobbled street. Pass Place du Château, walk along the ramparts and then turn right into Impasse de l'Église. At the end of the cul-de-sac, go down the stairs on the left and pass under the porch of the Passage de la Cure. When you reach Impasse du Rocher, continue to the right, pass under a soustet (a typical covered passageway in Provence) and arrive at a rocky outcrop offering a second viewpoint.

(3) Return in the opposite direction along Impasse du Rocher, then turn right onto Chemin d'Éoupe. Just before a water collection building, climb up to the left for a round trip offering a beautiful view over the old village.

(4) Return to Chemin d'Éoupe and continue to the left. Stay on this path, which follows the terrain between olive and fruit trees, then descends steeply, offering a beautiful view of the Baronnies and the old village. Ignore the paths branching off to the left and right.

(5) When you reach the edge of the Ravin de Suffie, turn right onto the path that runs alongside the stream. Then take the second street on the left, Chemin de la Combe.

(6) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and then straight on along Chemin de la Cascade. This small tarmac road runs alongside the Ravin de Cougoir to a spot with a bench, just at the foot of the waterfall.

(7) Return to the previous crossroads.

(6) Follow the small tarmac road to the left until you reach the car park where you started (S/E).

A short, leisurely walk along the refreshing stream and through the old village. That said, the views are nothing special. The waterfall, however, is magnificent! I wasn’t expecting that.

A lovely walk. It starts off quite steeply, but the route is often in the shade in the afternoon.
Two stunning viewpoints and a magnificent waterfall.

A lovely, easy walk featuring a waterfall, olive trees, panoramic views and ancient ruins. We did it in the opposite direction, starting with the waterfall, which was really nice. The route alternates between sunny and shaded sections. It’s accessible and the elevation gain is reasonable. It took us two hours, including plenty of stops. I highly recommend this lovely walk 👍
