Towards the Licoué hut

In the Aspe Valley, many people come to walk and admire the Chemin de la Mâture. Some of them continue on the GR®10, others make a loop by returning via the Col d'Arras. But who ventures further?
That's what we offer you with this simple and very pretty route.

Description of the walk

To get to the Bieus car park: cross the Cebers bridge (from the N134) and take the small road that climbs (right bank of the river) towards the start of the Chemin de la Mâture. Continue along this road to the end. After the hamlet of Manot, the road is unpaved but remains in very good condition. Towards the end, there are two hairpin bends (easy).

(S/E) The path starts off a little steep from the car park. Don't worry, it's not for long! This steepness is necessary to get over a escarpment. Then, the path crosses, almost horizontally, to the Col d'Arras, and joins the direct path that connects the hamlet of Boileau (above the Cebers bridge) to the Col d'Arras.

(1) Cross a fairly wide bog, passing to the side, and continue towards the pass.

(2) The path we are interested in branches off from the main path just after the bog and just before the Col d'Arras. You must immediately cross a fence on your left (close it properly after you have passed through). After that, the path climbs a little at the edge of the pastures, following a line of very old beech trees that provide good shade.

(2) Next, cross level ground in the undergrowth, passing two small ravines with a little water flowing in them.

(3) Shortly after the second ravine, the path suddenly starts to climb north-eastwards. This is normal: it is the final slope before you reach the pastures around the Cabane de Licoué.

(4) Return via the same route.

(1) Turn right to return to the Bieus car park (S/E).

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,173 m - Bieus car park (altitude 1,170 m)

  4. 3 : km 2.96 - alt. 1,435 m - Start of the final climb

Notes

Water at the Licoué hut. The streams crossed along the way provide fresh water, but this is not guaranteed.
Equipment: good walking shoes (high or low) are sufficient.
Season: suitable route when there is no snow (usually from May to November at least).

Worth a visit

A loop is possible by including the Chemin de la Mâture, but it is much longer.

Thanks for the suggestion. We did the hike in snowy conditions (on snowshoes) after the Col d'Arras, so it was quite challenging... Plus, spring snow is heavy. To mix things up on the way back, we followed the stream southwards to find a passage that wasn’t too difficult, then retraced our steps, but you really need a sense of adventure... The best bit: we were alone in the world with chamois and squirrels!
Not all the way to the GR! But there was a path marked on the map, covered in snow of course, and taking our time we followed that route. It was a lovely day!

Blimey! Did you make your way back down the stream to the GR10? That’s impressive!

I have often done this beautiful little hike and can confirm the quality of the description; one could add that it is the first part of the route leading
to the peak of Sesques via the Aspe side, 1,000 metres above
