Description of the walk

Starting at the gravel pit parking area, Two Bridges gravel parking area (B) W3W >>>

(S/E) Head north through the gate and follow the track up to the Crockern Farm, through the gate and follow a well-defined trail in a north-easterly direction. As the height is gained, Littaford Tors is a group of which the first is the first checkpoint.

(1) Continue in a northerly direction passing the second group of Littaford Tors. Looking left down the valley are the trees of Wistman's Woods. Continue along the ridge of the hill heading to the next rocky outcrop, Longaford Tor, perhaps one of the most impressive Tors on Dartmoor. From the northerly point of Langaford Tor, head north east to Higher White Tor. Now head north to Lower White Tor. This next leg is finding Brown's House, Ruins, heading in a north-west direction. Keep within the app GPS direction. Brown's House ruins are low walls, but can be seen.

(2) Brown's House. Head north-west, until a linear feature on a north-east to south-west line. Turn left at the linear feature, defined as an old wall or ditch and handrail, heading south-west down to the River. The river is young and small, more like a stream, but the area around it could be a little boggy. Keep to the linear feature up the hill to where the linear feature turns left. There will be a Firing range pole, red and white, nearby. Continue onto Rough Tor. The next leg is featureless; keep to the GPS. Heading in a near westerly direction to Devil's Tors, a small rock pile. Head west and down the hill, Beardown Man is only a short distance and should be visible.

Escape Route: Rough Tor to (3) head south and follow the West Dart River downstream to the weir of the Devonport Leat. Then handrail the leat through to Beardown Farm

(3) Head south to Lydford Tor, a check-off point.

(4) From Lydford Tor, there is normally a reasonable track leading to the Beardown Tors, a track that the military uses. Head south to Beardown Tors, heading directly through the middle. As the hill starts to descend to the wall, pass through the gate, down the track to the trees.

(5) Walk down through the trees along the track, and gates entering the farm. The route leads around Beardown Farm rather than through the farm yard. It is best to keep high of the farm yard boundary, as cattle make this section very muddy. Meet up with the farm entrance track and head down the hill to the bridge.

(6) At the bridge, there is signage. Turn left and east over the wall stile, into the woods and along the river edge. Follow over the next two stiles to the main road. Turn left and follow the road back to the start (E).

Notes

(B) The parking area at Two Bridges is of geological significance. The Quarry is one of the most important geomorphological sites in south-west England. It has solid granite and decaying granite. The theory being, the exposed granite will form a Tor, a 'Tor being born', and over millennia, a Tor will stand here.

During the walk

  • The Route: Where applicable, keep to the defined paths
  • The Countryside: Respect its inhabitants, and other Countryside users
  • Farmland: Leave gates as found. Be mindful around farms, be cautious of farm animals, and go around, not through, herds or flocks.
  • Leave no trace: leave only footprints, but take away great memories
  • Dogs: bag it and bin it, don't sling it.
  • Follow the Highway and Country Codes: Keep dogs under control. Farmers do have special powers regarding dogs worrying. Keep off the field where crops are growing, stay on the path.
  • Self Care: Know your own limitations; walking is an adventure and can involve risks. Be responsible and know when to turn back, rather than get into difficulties
  • First Aid: Treat blisters before they occur,
  • Groups: Walking within a group? Start together, keep together, end together.
  • Care should be taken when climbing tors, especially when wet: All three tors have easy access routes; be mindful of the more adventurous scrambles and appreciate that there can be some high drops.
  • Where sheep roam, and bracken grows. There is a remote chance of picking up 'ticks'. It is advisable to check oneself and the dogs after the walk for tics. Be Tick aware >>>
