Description of the walk

Park in the Plateau de Montciel car park, in Lons-le-Saunier.

(S/E) Head towards the Serge Jeanblanc outdoor activity centre, visible from the car park. Walk past it towards the equestrian esplanade, leaving it on your left. Reach the Montciel signpost.

(1) Turn right towards Messia and head down into the forest. Immediately take the path on the left (clearly marked on the ground but not shown on the IGN map). Gradually move away from the plateau.

(2) When you see a house with a flat roof, before the road, take the path on the left. Continue on to reach the crossroads by the Longefin cemetery.

(3) Cross the D159 road and take the Chemin de Longefin opposite (GR®59, red and white markings). Follow the signs for Les Pêchettes-Bas. At Les Pêchettes-Bas, follow the sign for “Chenauvière”. You will come out onto the D117; follow it to the right and cross the Sorne.

(4) As you leave the bridge, turn left onto Chemin de Condamine. At the fork, turn left onto Chemin des Vignes, which continues as a path running alongside houses and a stream. You will reach the Chenauvière signpost.

(5) Take the road on the right, then quickly the one on the left, which ends shortly afterwards (yellow markings). Turn right and continue along a path following the yellow markings. Climb up and head south. Pass at the foot of Mont Treillien, on the left, and reach a fork.

(6) Turn right onto the small tarmac road leading down to Moulin Boussot. At the junction, cross the road and head towards Vaux-sous-Bornay.

(7) Cross the Savignard stream, pass a small building on the right and head south, walking up the valley (yellow markings). Pass Moulin Boussot and, at the next fork (elevation 329), take the left-hand path. Continue south and begin the climb towards the first plateau. The path turns right and leaves the valley to reach a sort of pass.

(8) Pass the fence of the meadow towards La Grange Rouge (farm inn). At La Grange Rouge, follow the road towards La Condamine. Cross the D117, pass the town hall, turn right and reach the church.

(9) Continue by following theGR® and its red and white markings again. Leave the road leading to the cemetery on your right and continue left on the GR®.

(10) At the fork, take the path on the right. Reach the Montorient viewpoint.

(11) Continue left on theGR®, passing the Montorient farm. At the next junction, turn right onto a winding path and continue down the slope. You will reach a fork.

(12) Take the path on the left (leaving theGR®). Keep heading north-north-west and ignore the side paths. You’ll reach a sort of clearing with a majestic tree standing in the middle. At the junction (elevation 357), continue north for about 250 m.

(13) Then turn right and pass by the foot of the statue of the Virgin Mary overlooking the village of Courbouzon. Go down the path in front of the statue and immediately take thefirst path on the right towards the village.

(14) At the junction, turn left into Rue de Montorient and rejoin theGR®59. Ignore the paths branching off to the right, pass a wash house and reach a junction (church on the right).

(15) First turn left then right to follow Rue du Goujon (D159). Continue straight on until you reach the Longefin crossroads, which you passed on the way out.

(3) Continue straight ahead and walk alongside the cemetery on your left. Atthe first corner of the cemetery, turn left, and atthe second corner, turn right onto Chemin des Replets. Follow this path uphill (yellow markings). Arrive at the Montciel plateau.

(16) Continue straight ahead (north) and ignore the markings leading off to the left. Continue down a track to reach the Montciel Plateau car park (S/E).

This hike is pleasant and not particularly difficult. Between points 7 and 8, the climb is steady, and from point 3 to point 16, there is a short climb to get back to the car park. You walk between forest and pretty villages. Be sure to check the app for the given point to avoid getting lost. The only downside is that the path that passes in front of the statue of the Virgin Mary to descend to the village is poorly maintained, so look for another route if possible. Otherwise, great hike, thank you.

A lovely, varied and very pleasant walk. The descent towards Vaux-sous-Bornay, with the sound of rushing water and the chance to explore this little hamlet, is simply enchanting. The path then continues along the Sauvignard before climbing into the dense forest, where the route is shaded until point 8. Discovering the little village of Géruge, with its slate-roofed chapel and beautifully restored old houses, is a true haven of peace. The Montorient viewpoint offers a magnificent view. From the statue of the Virgin Mary, there is a lovely view of the village of Courbouzon, but the descent was a bit tricky as the tall grass was hanging down and obscuring the very narrow path. Courbouzon is well worth a stroll through its narrow streets along the Sorne, which babbles from cascade to cascade... what a delight!! The path up to Montciel hadn’t been mown, which made it rather difficult. Next time I’ll start the walk in Courbouzon so I can enjoy the serenity that
reigns in the village. Thank you, JLL39, for sharing this magnificent route, which I highly recommend. The weather was lovely – an unforgettable day!!

It was tricky to follow the correct route between points 1 and 2 because there were several paths running alongside each other. After that, it was a lovely route with some interesting views and a variety of paths. Well done on this lovely hike.

This lovely walk presents no technical difficulties, offering varied scenery and beautiful views. Admittedly, there is a section along a road, but this isn’t a problem; in fact, we didn’t come across a single vehicle. The clear route description (thanks, Jil39) is aided by the presence of yellow and red-and-white markings along most of the route.
Details:
- We took the path on the left (1), but at one point it disappears under brambles and undergrowth. We therefore turned back until we rejoined the yellow-marked path and followed it to reach point (2).
- Points (12) and (13) are confusing. At the majestic tree, turn immediately right to join the small path that leads straight down to the statue of the Virgin Mary.
- For a lunch break, there are two benches in Geruge (8) on a small square near the church, two more on the road to Montorient, and a picnic table at the Montorient viewpoint (11).

Walk done on 23/03/2022 – lovely weather, great car park, a walk through woods and countryside with a bit of road too; people in the Jura are really friendly. The route on the phone was spot on, but unless we made a mistake, the GPS showed 20 km at the end – otherwise a brilliant walk, thanks
