The route starts at the Fontaine de Fontenaille car park, on the greenway.
(S/E) Head towards the road, cross it and stay on the greenway.
(1) Enter the Tunnel de Diane. The tunnel is lit by a motion-detection system. It is nearly 900 metres long.
(2) Exit the tunnel. Stay on the greenway and continue. Cross the viaduct and then reach the old Conliège station.
(3) Walk past the station towards the entrance gate and look out for the path on the right leading to the hermitage. Take this path and walk past the Oratory of Sainte-Anne to continue climbing.
(4) You’ll emerge onto the small promontory where the hermitage stands. Take in the view, walk along the boundary wall and, at the corner by the statue, leave the beautiful carved stone gate behind and use the steps. Walk around the terraces and rejoin the upper path.
(4) Make your way to the entrance to the site and then take theGR® path that leads slightly downhill in front of you. Pass the Fontaine Ermite and, further on up a small slope, reach a crossroads of paths.
(5) Take the branch ofthe GR® that heads off to the right and moves away from the nearby road. Continue along this path for quite a while. You will reach the Croix de Charmay.
(6) Enjoy the scenery and set off again in the same direction. Gradually, the path turns eastwards. You’ll reach a junction with a view of the meadows.
(7) Take the path on the right, leaving the track which climbs up through the fields and a road. The path then heads south-west and descends quite steeply to approach the road and the car park where you started. Reach the signposts at the roadside.
(8) Turn left towards the Belvédère des Tilleuls. The path climbs gently, running parallel to the road. Reach the viewpoint and head due south. Make sure you stay on the right path by following the markers. You’ll soon reach the tarmac road.
(9) Cross the road carefully and head straight along the small road. You will soon come across a road sign warning of ‘risk of black ice’.
(10) Once you reach the sign, look for the small path leading into the woods on your right. It descends gradually through the woods to join theGR® 59 “Échappée Jurassienne”. Follow it to the right, then immediately left towards the Belvédère de la Guillotine, which you’ll reach after a sharp bend in the path.
(11) After taking in the view, head back northwards and rejoin the tarmac road you left earlier.
(12) At the junction at elevation 532, turn right onto the road and follow it for a few hundred metres. You will reach aGR® junction.
(13) Leave the road and take the track on the right. Go down the steps and reach the old narrow-gauge railway line. Continue along this completely flat route and cross the viaducts and tunnels, enjoying the cool air. As you pass, admire the stalactites forming on the ceiling between the two tracks of the double tunnel.
Continue in this way until you reach a fairly large clearing.
(14) Look out for a sign on a tree to the right indicating the Tunnel des 100 Marches. The path heads off to the right, then takes a sharp bend to descend into the valley and reach the tunnel entrance. If you feel like it, take a round trip through it, but a torch is strongly recommended. Return to the clearing and resume your route, which will soon take you back to the station.
- This detour is optional, but walking through the Tunnel des 100 Marches is a remarkable experience.
Go through the small gates and head back to your car park (S/E).
