Park on Place Cazenave in the village of Montpeyroux.
(S/E) Turn left onto Allée des Aubépines (dead end), pass the cemetery and continue to the end of the lane, then enter the woods via the path marked in yellow.
(1) Pass the organic bakery and join the gravel path. Continue along this path via Allée du Peycher on your right.
(2) After passing the Peycher farm, turn around and admire the view of the Château de Montpeyroux slightly to your left. Enter the woods and continue along the yellow-marked trail.
At the crossroads, you can take a 200-metre detour to see the ruins of the Moulin de Calendreaud mill on the Lidoire.
(3) Retrace your steps, take the path on the left, cross a wooden footbridge over the Rieutord stream and continue straight on to the hamlet of Saint-Cloud.
(4) Turn left, continue along the road for 300 metres and then continue for another 50 metres to see the Moulin de Saint-Cloud on the Lidoire.
(5) Retrace your steps and turn left onto the path that leads to a meadow. Walk along the meadow and continue (yellow markings) on the path that enters the Saint-Cloud forest again.
(6) When you leave the first part of the forest, walk along the Lidoire for a few metres before climbing up a meadow. Stay on the yellow-marked trail and remain on the Montpeyroux circular trail. Return to the Montaigne road.
(7) Turn right towards the hamlet of Papassus, passing in front of the Michel de Montaigne memorial.
(8) Shortly afterwards, in the hamlet of Papassus, turn right for a 400-metre round trip to see Michel de Montaigne's fountain at the end of a meadow (open fence).
(9) Retrace your steps.
(8) Turn right and re-enter the forest. Always take the path on your left when you come to a fork. When you come out onto a meadow, turn left, keeping to the yellow-marked path, and cross a road. Descend opposite into an area of pidgeon hunting huts.
(10) Turn right and cross some old vineyards.
(11) Enter the woods and take the path on your left to see the Girondins cave and the two mills on the hill (difficult). Be careful to follow the trail closely as the path is no longer marked from this point onwards. Alternatively, turn right below for an easier return journey.
The ascent and descent of the hill is on a narrower path. Stay on the trail to discover the two old mills and the cave (an old quarry that was used to build the castle).
(12) Continue and leave the forest; you will be amazed by the view of the Château de Montpeyroux, before returning to the road and climbing back up to the village to finish this hike (S/E).
