Description of the walk

Start: The Jack Russel, Faccombe (SP11 0DS) Grid ref. SU 391 579

(S/E) Leaving the pub on your right, continue down the lane for 400 yds and at a joining lane.

(1) Turn left onto a track. Pass a barn on the right and continue for 600 yds when the track turns left. Follow it to a lane, which crosses and take the path opposite. This drops steadily, coming out on a lane in another 600 yds.

(2) Go downhill on the lane for 350 yds then go left past a gate, and follow the slightly winding path in the dry valley bottom to some farm buildings in 1100 yds.

(3) Go left round the buildings, and up a track, which becomes very steep entering a wood, only leveling off as you leave the wood.

(4) At the top, take the path half left, which shortly comes out on a lane.

(5) Turn right for 400 yds to reach the pub. (S/E)

Practical information

Start: The Jack Russel, Faccombe (SP11 0DS) Grid ref. SU 391 579

Driving to start: About eleven miles from Newbury, take the A343 towards Andover, and after Highclere go right immediately before the Yew Tree. Then through narrow lanes, again forking right in Ashmansworth to reach Faccombe and the pub.

Refreshements: The Jack Russel , a bit in the back of beyond, but now open again after a period of closure: the pub has been extended to provide a large restaurant area with an extensive menu, a bit on the pricey side. Good selection of draught beers.
