Description of the walk

Start: The Carpenters Arms, Burghclere (RG20 9JY) Grid ref. SU 463 607

(S/E) From The Carpenters Arms, turn left out of the pub, take the first lane to the left.

(1) In 150yds turn right onto a footpath. This bear left round a farmhouse.

(2) Then at the end of the field turn right into an avenue of trees. At the end of this turn left and follow the field boundary to a stile on the left, which ignores and go half right across the field and down to a gap in the trees with a memorial seat.

(3) Go forward slightly left to cross a plank bridge, then slightly left again and continue forward to cross the disused and overgrown railway embankment, coming out onto a metalled lane about 250yds later.

(4) Go right and immediately left up the farm drive, through the yard and follow the footpath forward through two fields with a wood on the right-hand side.

(5) At the end of the wood, the footpath makes a turn to the right and comes out in 300yds on the drive of Earlstone Manor.

(6) Turn sharp left here and follow the track for about 1200 yds till it reaches the road in Burghclere. Go straight on for 250 yds.

(7) Take the gate left just before the church, leading into an open field. Cross this and go through another gate, then quite steeply downhill and cross the boggy ground on a wooden causeway.

(8) At the end of the field, turn right on the lane and immediately left on Brenda Parker Way. By the railway, go through the tight kissing gate into a field.

(2) Bear slightly left to the stile that you ignored on the route out. From here, retrace your steps to the pub.(S/E)

Practical information

Start: The Carpenters Arms, Burghclere (RG20 9JY) Grid ref. SU 463 607

Driving to start: About four miles from Newbury, take the A338 South, and at The Swan roundabout go right for the A34 but take the first turn off at the next roundabout straight past Burghclere. In half a mile, turn left at a T-junction and the pub is in a few yards on the right hand side.

Refreshments: The Carpenters Arms, Burghclere, a village pub that serves excellent and reasonably priced sandwiches and home cooked bar meals in the bar, in the recently extended conservatory, or in the patio garden. It has decent draught beer from Arkells.
