Description of the walk

From Port Vendres, follow the road to Cap Béar lighthouse (go around the commercial port and then follow along the coast to Cap Béar). Park next to the semaphore gate or at the foot of the lighthouse.

The path begins just opposite the entrance gate of the semaphore (direction signs). Follow the direction of Port Vendres.
A little further on, the path splits into two (1) take the left-hand path (heading away from Port Vendres).
After a short distance, the path splits into two again (2), take the path on the right.
You will eventually reach a track (3).
Turn right and follow the track until you reach a path that leads down to the left alongside the vineyards (4).
Keep following the path down until you reach the sea, almost at Paulilles beach (5).
Take the path to the left, and head back along the coastal path with yellow waymarks until you reach Béar lighthouse (6).
Take the left-hand path to head back to the semaphore and the car park.

Practical information

Although the return journey may be by the sea, you will still need appropriate footwear (if you don’t want to get a sprained ankle!).

In the nearby area

Personally, I did this walk on a Saturday night in the middle of the summer. The views were amazing, even by night, and we even got to see fireworks above Banyuls sur Mer! (just make sure you take head torches).
Before or after the walk, you can also enjoy the classified site of Anse Paulille (where there once used to be an explosives factory) and go on a tour of the artisanal vinegar factory, La Guinelle, in Cosprons.

Absolutely sublime scenery, but not an easy hike. You need to be well shod and not recommended for people with vertigo, as many sections are on the edge of cliffs. Lots of flowers and cacti along the way.
We didn't manage to find the course further back, so we did the coastal round trip from the Paulilles car park (it takes a good 3 hours).

A lovely walk with its share of climbs and descents, but it's best to be well shod and in good physical condition, and be careful on the cliff edge, especially for those who take our 4-legged friends!

A great tour around Cape Bear. The views and landscapes are very beautiful!
However, 2 points caught our attention:
- the difficulty, easy, is not representative: there are a lot of climbs and descents on steep paths, half of which are on cliff sides and can be dangerous for children. I would have rated it as moderately difficult.
- The starting point is not accessible by car. The best thing would be to go to point 4 (the beach) and start the walk from this side.

Second time we've done this circuit. It's still just as magnificent 5 years later! This time we had the Visorando app and didn't get lost. The route is very easy to follow with GPS positioning, but much less so with a simple paper map.
We did this walk in bright sunshine and the colours were really beautiful. I thought it was quite busy for October (it was already that way in spring 2019, I can't imagine summer!).
You have the option of continuing as far as Anse de Paulilles or parking at the free Anse de Paulilles car park and starting the walk from point 4, going by the coast and returning inland.
I recommend this tour!

Beautiful views
An easy walk, albeit with a few steep seaside sections requiring good footwear.

A parish specific to Brittany!

ATTENTION, the road up to the semaphore or lighthouse is forbidden (unless you have the right to do so). It is preferable to park at Paulilles beach.
The walk is notoriously easy, but it is uneven in places.

A very fine route, with beautiful views.
On the other hand, the route is not "easy".
It's not difficult either, but some sections require attention, and some of the gradients can be tricky in the heat.
Another point is that around the sheds at the bottom of Cap-Béar, the path signs tend to disappear.

Superb tour, but not as easy as indicated. The return along the coast is really steep. Children should not be carried, and those under 8/10 years old are likely to have difficulty over the distance. Hiking boots are strongly recommended.
But the breathtaking panorama is well worth the walk.
The time indicated is 2 hours... provided you're in good shape and don't stop to look at this marvellous natural environment.
It took us 4 hours. You should still allow 3.
Enjoy the walk.

Admittedly, we're not great walkers
(I had a herniated disc operation earlier in the year ... and my partner was carrying a 12kg baby on his back)
But we did find that the uphill and downhill sections of this walk were quite tiring. So don't forget to take water and a little chocolate pick-me-up!
The seaside circuit is incredible and we regretted not having brought our swimming costumes so that we could enjoy the little creeks with their crystal-clear waters!

A great route that varies from coast to coast! I parked at the Paulilles car park, which also allows you to visit this beautiful site and enjoy its lovely beaches.

Done in May 2023 starting from Bernadi beach, easy to park, beautiful discovery of the rocky coast and return by the heights allowing a different point of view.

A lovely walk, particularly along the coastal path. After the lighthouse, you can climb up to the antenna for a pretty view from the top.

Very nice walk in glorious weather in mid-February. Taken from the lighthouse as suggested.
Good footwear is essential as there are one or two steep climbs over pebbles.
As mentioned elsewhere, pay attention to the descent towards the sea at point 3, which corresponds to the 3rd proposed path to the left. The map tells you to descend to the south (towards Bernadi beach) on a descending ridge and not to the east, towards Balanti beach, descending into the valley. The map is right!

There's no water on the loop or at the S/E.

And yes, we spend a few minutes in the middle of burnt-out vines and olive trees. Let that be a sobering thought.
