Description of the walk

Park in the car park behind the town hall/school.

(S/E) Go to the crossroads and turn left onto Rue des Templiers.

(1) Leave Rue des Rosiers on your right, which you will return to, and continue straight ahead to cross the village.

(2) When you reach the three-way junction at the last houses, turn left onto Chemin du Moulin.

(3) Cross La Boisse.

(4) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the yellow-marked PR® trail, which climbs into the woods, skirting the Rochers de Robert.

(5) Leave the PR® and turn left towards La Garde, which will take you to the tarmac road of the same name.

(6) Descend to the D119a, which you take to the right for about 100 metres to reach an intersection.

(7) Take Chemin des Rimas on the left, cross the D125 with a short first turn left then right, and take the stony path opposite to the banks of the Barberolle.

(8) Turn left and follow the river for about 500 metres. Leave the riverbank before the flood retention basin and, without crossing the ford, take the grassy path on the left in the middle of the fields, which joins Chemin des Charbonniers.

(9) Follow it to the right until you come to a small tarmac road, Route des Marches.

(10) Turn left towards the D125. Carefully follow the departmental road in the same direction and cross the bridge over the Boisse. Immediately afterwards, take the small road on the left towards Le Vignolas.

(11) At the Vignolas and Les Chaux crossroads, cross the D119 by turning right and then left, and immediately follow the small road on the left, which turns into a track and leads to the Charpey road in Saint-Vincent. Cross it and follow Chemin des Gérenthons opposite, passing in front of the water treatment plant.

(12) At Les Gérenthons, turn right to reach the junction with a road (Chemin des Beriches). Turn right again and follow it to the hamlet.

(13) Turn left behind the houses and follow a path towards Col de Toutes Aures and Les Galinières. Join the D119a about a hundred metres from the pass.

(14) Turn left onto this road towards Saint-Vincent, then turn right up the road (Chemin des Galinières). Turn right before the last house to join a forest track.

(15) Turn left along the edge of the woods, then veer right to enter them.

(16) Continue straight ahead at the fork to rejoin the tarmac road and reach a crossroads.

(17) Turn right onto Chemin de la Combe and join Rue des Rosiers.

(18) Follow it to the left. Turn left at the crossroads to pass in front of the church and rejoin Rue des Templiers.

(1) Head left towards the town hall/school, then turn right at the crossroads to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike is not difficult, except for its relative length for some hikers. It follows paths and a few sections of road. There is little elevation gain. However, caution is required at certain road junctions and some passages are less well marked, particularly in wooded areas. In each neighbourhood, you will find a marker with the name of one of the twelve Poilus (French soldiers) from the commune.

Worth a visit

The Commanderie des Templiers, in the heart of the village, behind the church. It is not open to visitors, but you can admire the façades.

The Gorges du Pertuis (or Pertus) with the Baume de la Martine, which served as a shelter for the village's inhabitants during the last war.

The old kaolin quarry, on the north-side hill before the Pertus.

It’s fascinating to come across the memorial stones of those who died in the First World War.
The route has no drinking fountains or benches/tables where you can take a break.
It’s best to set off around 11.30am–12.00pm so you can be back at the car park by midday, where there are tables, benches and very clean toilets.
A short but very interesting route – I recommend it...

After the quarries, in the hamlet, I turned right in front of a house that looks like a chapel, then at the end of the road, I took the path on the left (which avoids the road) and ended up on the D 119a.At the Col de Toutes Aures, I turned right, then took the path on the left towards Les Galinières, then at the water tower, I took the path on the left to avoid the road.

A lovely, easy walk, very well described, passing through hamlets with beautifully restored houses and offering beautiful views of the upper Ardèche on one side and the Vercors valleys on the other.
