Description of the walk

Access by car via Esparros to the Col de Oueil Lusent, where there is parking available.

(S/E) Head slightly downhill along the forest track towards the south-west for about 500 m, until you reach a left-hand bend with two cairns at the start of a path.

(1) Turn left and follow the path for 2 km through the forest, following the yellow markings which are somewhat spaced out. On leaving the forest, you will emerge onto the grassy slopes of Courtaou de Tire-Mouréou.

(2) Before the wide pass, look out for a large cairn on the left in the middle of the meadow, followed by two small posts with yellow markings: signPR®1thenPR®17. Head straight up to the left across the middle of the meadow, then cut diagonally to the right towards the rocks until you reach a solitary tree. Pass well above it: you may sometimes find yellow markings by climbing straight up the slope and following a sort of track (clearly carved out by water).

(3) Go round the Puits de la Pindorle on the left, climb up the gully aiming for the pass to the right of the Signal de Bassia whilst following the large, elevated rocks (with yellow markings) above the grassy area. Reach the Col de Bassia straddling the slopes of the Baronnies and Payolle.

(4) Follow the north-east ridge to the left to the Signal de Bassia.

(5) Continue a few metres further up to the second cairn: stunning panoramic view.
Follow the ridge eastwards: descend about 60 m to a pass via the pylon, then return to the ridge. From the pass, climb to Cap de Castillon.

(6) From the summit, you can see the Castillon hut in a green meadow, in front of a forest: there is no path leading to it. Follow the north-east-facing ridge down a steep descent to a sort of pass.

(7) Continue slightly uphill over the small mound: be careful not to veer off to the left. Then descend, keeping further to the left, to reach the grassy area at the Col du Castillon and its hut.

(8) Follow the path below on the right. Reach a large cairn in the forest.

(9) Turn right onto a path, passing through a gap in a ridge (climbing spot). Continue at a leisurely pace to reach the Col de Oueil Lusent car park (S/E).

A magnificent route, involving an uphill trek through a stunning beech forest. On reaching the exit, there was a bit of mist, but we followed the yellow markings. For the rest of the climb, you need to head for the pass; we took a slight detour, but it didn’t matter.
Extraordinary views.
The walk along the ridge is magnificent; after the post (indicated in the description), the path becomes a bit unclear. Not recommended for those prone to vertigo.
However, we couldn’t find the path to start the descent. It was quite dizzying and the fog was closing in, so we headed back down the path for about 100 metres to follow a trail marked on the map. Then complete fog all the way to the forest. No path, no markings; fortunately, with the GPS we were able to find our way, but do be careful in this situation – there appear to be rocky outcrops that need to be bypassed.
The entrance to the forest wasn’t very clear (thank goodness for the GPS!!)
And there we are.

Stunning, but a nerve-wracking descent due to the fog.

Access by car: it’s more of a track than a road towards the end.

A lovely family hike. Although the elevation gain isn’t much, it’s still quite challenging given the short length of the route. A wild, unspoilt trail with no particular difficulties. We really enjoyed it.

A lovely walk, but the descent should not be attempted in foggy conditions; if you do, stick closely to the path

A really nice walk, well signposted on the way up, but no markings for the descent and not much of a path, so make sure you follow the route on the app.
Quite busy at the weekend.
Make sure you wrap up warm at the summit or head slightly down the ridge to get out of the wind.
The climb is a bit of a workout, but the view at the top is well worth it.
For the drive up to Oueil Lusent from the car park, a 4x4 or SUV is preferable due to the large stones and potholes (though it’s perfectly manageable in any car).

A sunny day… a magnificent hike on the Baronnies side 🤩
Done twice on the Beyrede side… much less scenic and less of a change of scenery.
The return route was more intuitive than signposted…

A lovely hike – short but quite challenging – with a wonderful reward at the summit: a stunning panorama of the peaks to the south and west and the valley to the north.
The route is sometimes difficult to follow, but there’s little risk of getting completely lost, as the mast on the peak is easy to spot. On the way back, the hut serves as a landmark.
We did this hike in sunny weather but were caught off guard by a very cold wind on the ridge!
There are few trees, so there is little shade for those going in summer.
The return journey is quite difficult: there is no path and the descent is quite steep. Our walking poles proved very useful.
