Paths on the hills of Montastruc

A lovely walk with a few fairly steep slopes, mostly on paths, a few hundred metres on road, with beautiful views over the Tarn valley, Montauban and (occasionally) the Pyrenees. Best done in dry weather.

Description of the walk

Start in front of the town hall (several parking spaces).

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, follow the road towards Saint-Maurice for 200 m and take the small cul-de-sac on the right, which climbs steeply on a concrete surface before turning into a path after 300 m. Turn round during the climb to catch your breath and enjoy a lovely view of the Tarn valley. Continue until you reach a road.

(1) Follow this road to the left along the tarmac road for 600 m until you reach a right-angle bend.

(2) Leave it and take the grassy path branching off to the right. More lovely views of the valley. Continue along the path which follows the ridge and becomes a track before leading out into an abandoned orchard.

(3) Head down to the right to the track (Chemin des Coques), follow it to the left for a few dozen metres, then turn right onto a tarmac path that passes beneath the Levret farm.

(4) Turn right onto a lovely path through the woodland which leads back up to a quiet road; follow this to the right towards the water tower.

(5) At the crossroads, take the D40 to the right and follow it for 400 m (be careful, as it is quite busy).

(6) Leave the main road, turn right and follow the small tarmac road. Leave it at the hairpin bend and continue straight on for about a hundred metres.

(7) Take the dirt track to the right for 200 m, turn right at the farm buildings to follow a grassy path and continue to the fruit trees, which you should go round to the right.

(8) Turn left onto the path that descends (caution: very steep and slippery in wet weather) and you will come to a small road. Follow it to the left until you reach the town hall car park (S/E).

We followed the description and map to the letter, as right from the car park there was a Yellow Cross and then some confusing yellow signposting. We saw beautiful scenery, lovely paths lined with wildflowers and a steep climb.
