Lucainena Mining Trail

Discover the peaceful village of Lucainena de las Torres, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and its surroundings.
The walk begins along the old railway line, a greenway surrounded by olive trees. We’ll then reach the restored wash house and the fountain overlooking the village. The walk continues towards the old mining facilities with their imposing calcination kilns.
To finish, a stroll through the village’s narrow, flower-lined streets.

Description of the walk

On the road between Sorbas and Tabernas, take the ALP-130 towards Lucainena. Park at the entrance to the village, just before the school, in the car park designated for the greenway (Via Verde de Lucainena). The route is clearly signposted throughout the walk: white and green markings.

(S/E) Set off eastwards and join the greenway straight away; along the way, the old railway station has been converted into a Tourist Information Centre. Continue straight on until you reach the viewpoint on the greenway overlooking the olive groves, where you can take a break on a bench.

(1) Turn back for about 50 m and take the road going uphill to the left towards the village. Continue along this small road until you reach the AL-102 road, which links Lucainena to Nijar. Turn right towards the village and walk for about 200 m.

(2) Take the second road on your left, which climbs towards the village’s orchards. After about 100 m, leave the road that branches off to the left and take the sloping path. You’ll pass through the hamlet of El Marchal. Carry on to the end of the hamlet (you can take a break at the cistern at the very top of the hamlet), and turn right towards the village of Lucainena. Once you reach the village, stay in the upper part and, after 50 m, turn left to reach the washhouse.

(3) Once you reach the wash house and the village fountain, carry on straight ahead without heading back down towards the village. Follow this track, which is suitable for vehicles and offers lovely views over the valley. The old kilns are visible in the distance. Continue to the ruins of the mining company’s stables, which are situated near the kilns.

(4) When you reach the ruins, turn right to continue along the signposted path. Walk alongside the ruins for about 100 m, then continue through the tunnel to reach the calcination kilns. There are eight of these kilns, which were used to process iron ore; one of them has been restored and is open to the public. Continue along the road past the kilns for 100 m until you reach a junction.

(5) Turn right and continue along this road (Calle Unamuno) for about 1 km to reach the village.

(6) Leave Calle Unamuno and turn left onto Calle Viento, walking round the church. Once you’ve gone round it, turn left twice, then right, and head towards the town hall square via Calle Posadas. Then return along Calle Posadas and turn right onto Calle Almería. Follow this street, which bends to the left, until you reach the junction with Calle Bilbao.

(7) Turn left to reach the car park directly (S/E).

Worth a visit

You can stop for a bite to eat in the village at Mezon la Plaza on the Town Hall square.
Do take the small AL-102 road linking Lucainena to Nijar – the views are breathtaking. The old village of Nijar, situated on the hilltop, is also well worth a visit.
The Sorbas Caves, the Tabernas Desert.

A lovely walk to explore this charming village and its former steel industry. There are plenty of flowers, no doubt thanks to the spring. Our route covered 7.8 km without spending too much time wandering around the village. It’s still an easy walk. Be careful, though: according to the sign (and my level of Spanish), the water from the fountain is not ‘guaranteed’ to be safe to drink.
