Tabernas Desert – El Condor

This walk takes you to the ruins of the sets used for the film “El Condor” (later reused for “Conan the Barbarian”). It continues through the spectacular Llano del Duque valley, made famous by the film “Once Upon a Time in the West”. Return via the road that runs alongside the motorway, offering lovely views of the Western Leone sets.

Description of the walk

On the A92, take the Tabernas exit. From the roundabout, take the road leading to Western Leone. Pass the theme park and continue along this road for 500 m. Park in a car park with a wrought-iron gate (see photo).

(S/E) Go through the gate and follow the track for approximately 350 m.

(1) At the fork, keep to the right-hand side of the track which goes round Western Leone (entry fee applies). Continue along this track to the ruins, 600 metres further on.

(2) Turn right into a small valley with a high concentration of salt on the ground. Continue to the Arrioyo del Verdelecho.

(3) Turn right and follow the riverbed for 2.5 km until you reach the bridge on the N340a.

(4) Turn right just after the bridge and walk alongside the rock stabilisation works. Climb the rocks as soon as possible and head for the motorway exit roundabout. Cross the roundabout and turn right onto the road leading to Western Leone. Continue for about 2 km to reach the car park (S/E).

The entrance to the trail is blocked by a double gate; simply go round it on the right. After visiting the ruined village, it’s difficult to reach the canyon unless you follow your instincts by heading up to the right and finding a path that leads down into it. At the end of the canyon, after passing under the bridge, look for an exit; it’s on the right about thirty metres away. Head up the right-hand side until you reach a very steep slope that leads to the road, and you can then follow the directions provided by the creator of this walk.
