A superb forest hike, almost entirely in the shade.

Description of the walk

Start at the hamlet of Les Roissards in Bouvante-le-Haut

Yellow/Green markings

(S/E) Head north, skirting the houses at the top for about a hundred metres, then take the small grassy path on the left, heading south. You’ll come to a road.

(1) Cross it and continue along the path that follows the bottom of the Combe valley.

(2) When the path turns right, continue uphill along the track at the bottom of the valley. This gradually veers off to the left and joins a cross-country track.

(3) Turn left as you climb, pass two hairpin bends and reach the cliffs.

(4) Pass beneath them and continue climbing.

(5) After passing under a remarkable arch on a dizzying path, stop at this natural viewpoint.

(6) Cross the stream that plunges over the Saut de la Truite and reach a fork in the path.

(7) Follow the Mur des Chartreux opposite for 20 m to make the most of this viewpoint, then return to the fork.

(7) Take the south-facing path which climbs gently up to the Refuge Gardiole.

(8) At the Refuge Gardiole, the end point of this hike, take in the surroundings, then head back to the car park via the same route, enjoying a different view in a different light (S/E).

Notes

You can start from the village of Bouvante le Haut; we chose to set off from the hamlet of Les Roissards to avoid the road.

(8) Gardiole refuge, picnic tables, toilets.

The walk is almost entirely through the forest and the markings are clearly visible.

Be sure to check the weather forecast as it can be chilly at the top, and mist can spoil everything. As you’re walking through the forest, there are no explicit landmarks on the trails; you must follow the yellow/green markings.

A lovely walk. The lower section near the stream is pleasant. The steep section through the woods is great for those who enjoy a bit of a challenge. The section along the forest track is less interesting but isn’t very long. And finally, the section that starts along the rock faces and leads to the viewpoint is brilliant.
For those with a sweet tooth, there are strawberries and raspberries that will be ripe by the end of June.

A pleasant, shaded and well-marked walk, with lovely views towards the summit.
On the way back, to avoid the steep descent through the forest, we took the gentler
but sunnier.

Hike completed on 2 July 2022 in glorious weather. The ascent is perfectly shaded on hot days. There was a very brief stretch in the sun; the acacia bushes were growing back and we would have needed to bring secateurs to clear the few metres required. Wild strawberries and raspberries. Reaching the top is a magnificent reward for the effort. In my opinion, there’s no real need to carry on once you’ve reached the summit; you do arrive at a forest lodge, but the sight of the parked cars can be a bit of a let-down. I’ll do this hike again in the autumn to enjoy the colours! In short: a very lovely hike

A lovely hike; we did the climb in the morning as it was very hot; luckily, most of the climb is in the shade!
The scenery is magnificent. Definitely worth doing again.
