Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Aires cemetery.

(S/E) With your back to the cemetery, turn left then right onto Chemin Neuf to reach the crossroads in front of the church.

(1) Turn left, walk past the school and follow Chemin de Bernaude. Continue straight ahead until you reach the dead-end sign.

(2) Leave the tarmac road and take a track on the right that runs alongside the Ruisseau des Aires stream. Continue to the hairpin bend and don't forget to look up to see the Pic de la Coquillade above you.

(3) Continue along the track.

(4) From this point, you will begin to see the Castrum on its spur, and as you climb, it will become closer and closer. Continue straight ahead at the fork at the foot of the chapel.

(5) Leave the track and take a very small path on the left at an old post. Then climb the steps that will lead you to the Saint-Michel Chapel. Continue to the viewpoint overlooking the entire valley and the ruins of the Castrum below.

(6) Return to the fork.

(5) Go straight ahead, pass the car park and continue along Route du Péras.

(7) At the sign for "Les Abbes par l'ancienne drovers' road", turn right onto the small path and head towards the hamlet of Les Abbes.

(8) Go through a gate and turn right onto a small path that descends into the undergrowth, crosses the Ruisseau de Vernière stream and joins the first houses of Les Aires at a housing estate.

(9) Turn slightly right onto Chemin des Jardins, cross the footbridge over Ruisseau des Aires and come out at a crossroads not far from the church. Turn right onto Rue de l'Horloge.

(1) Turn left to return to the cemetery car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

In the village, take a look at the century-old clock and its mechanism, visible in the porch below.

In the village church, see the Visigoth slab, found inside the Chapel of Saint Michael, which was built on an ancient temple dedicated to Mercury. This chapel was once a hermitage and is now the site of an annual pilgrimage on 8 May.

A very pleasant, easy walk, but with a nice surprise at the top of the hill: the adorable little Saint-Michel chapel and the walls, ramparts and buildings around and below it were renovated, or rather consolidated, about ten years ago: it's been done with taste, it's magnificent! The chapel is touching in its simplicity. The silence, the view over the Orb valley, the Caroux opposite, the Montagne Noire in the mist of the setting sun... everything is peaceful. Thank you, Palacio, for sharing this walk and for mentioning the clock and its mechanism, which can be seen at Les Aires!
