Royal Leamington Spa Railway Station to Offchurch, Rail Trails

A fashionable spa town with a history built on its saline springs, Leamington Spa’s beautiful town centre is known for its Regency architecture, wide boulevards and award-winning gardens. First following the Grand Union Canal and then the River Leam, this trail takes you into the surrounding countryside to the village of Offchurch. On your route you can explore the Leam Valley Local Nature Reserve and Newbold Comyn, as well as the renowned Jephson Gardens. Branch out from this fashionable spa town to follow the Grand Union Canal to the village of Offchurch and back via Newbold Comyn.

Description

Start: Royal Leamington Spa Railway Station (CV31 3NS) Grid ref. SP 317 652

(S/E) Exit Royal Leamington Spa Railway Station (A) through the car park. Turn left up ramp and zigzag up to the main road (A425). Cross the road and turn right on the opposite pavement.

(1) Just after the bus shelter, turn left down steps to the Grand Union Canal. Turn left on the towpath, the canal on your right. Walk ahead on the towpath for 4 Km, passing under 10 bridges and by Radford Bottom Lock.

(2) Go ahead under railway bridge 334. Immediately turn left up the tarmac path (The Offchurch Greenway) Walk ahead on the cycleway for 1 Km.

(3) Before the bridge, fork left up the narrow path. Go through the kissing gate. Turn left into the field to the gates at the top. Walk through the gate. Cross the road and bear left into Village Street, signposted Offchurch.

(4) In 20m, turn right by the side of the kissing gate onto the path through trees. Cross the footbridge into the field. Bear slightly left to a garden fence at the bottom. Walk ahead on an enclosed path between bushes. Walk through a kissing gate to join the road.

(5) Keep ahead on the left verge, passing a road junction on right. Passing a post box, then The Stag on the left, bend right with the road.

(6) Opposite The Haven on the right, turn left cross the road to a stile (Millennium Way) into the field. Walk ahead on the field edge, with the fence on the left. Where the conifers bend left, continue ahead, then slightly left contouring around the bank.

Cross a stile. Bear right up to the field edge and ahead to the corner. Turn left to the next corner. Walk through the gap to a tarmac drive (Offchurch Bury Park).

(7) Turn right down the drive. After 310m or so, turn left before a gate, there is a distinctive cedar tree on the left.
Bear right onto the track with trees on the right. Follow the track for 500m, then turn left downhill to a stile.

(8) Cross the bridge over the weir. Keep left on the path close to River Leam. In 70m, turn left on footbridge over the river. Turn right passing the ford. Walk ahead across the field to a large solitary tree. Turn left to a stile. Walk ahead on the field edge for 180m to hedge gap, bear right, passing wooden fence on the right.

Walk ahead across the field to a waymark post at the opposite corner. Cross the footbridge, through the hedge gap, to a track corner (Newbold Comyn Park).

(9) Turn left on the track for 120m through a gap in trees. Turn right, still on the track, trees on the right. Walk ahead to a metal seat on the right. In 20m, turn right onto the path, passing green a litter bin on the right.

(10) Follow the path round left and right bends to the track junction (white waymark post on left). Turn left on the track. Keep ahead ignoring all side paths. In 600m, pass a car park on the left. In 300m, at an open area, walk ahead uphill, with the hedge on the left. Walk through the gap by the side of the field gate to join a lane. Go ahead on the lane.

(11) At the end of the brick wall, pass a metal barrier, then turn left through a gap in a wooden fence. Walk ahead downhill. At the corner of a building, bear right down bank, then bear left ahead on the grass, passing a large laurel bushes on the left. Walk ahead through trees to cross the road at a speed bump.

(12) Turn right on the tarmac cycleway. In 15m, at the end of trees on the left, bear left across the grass. Turn right on the path between trees, parallel to a cycleway/road on the right. Keep ahead on the path.

(13) In 500m, at the path junction, bear left down through wooden barriers to a road. Cross the road, walk through gates into Jephson Gardens. Walk ahead on a wide tarmac path, passing a café/toilets on the left. Go through gates at the end of Gardens opposite The Royal Pump Rooms and Baths.

(14) Cross the road. Walk ahead on the surfaced path to railings. Turn right, the river on your left.

(15) In 100m, turn left cross the footbridge over the river. At the end of the bridge, turn left on the wide tarmac path. Follow the path (York Walk) to a road. Cross the road (using zebra crossing). Walk ahead on the path, signpost Railway Station.

At the next road (Sayer Close), turn left. Then, at the end ofthe road, turn right through the tunnel under Royal Leamington Spa Railway Station. (S/E)

Transport: Royal Leamington Spa is on the mainline between London Marylebone and Birmingham, as well as the line to Coventry and Nuneaton. You can also connect to the West Coast mainline and other major routes.
Trains run hourly to all stations on the Stratford branch and Coventry via Kenilworth, as well as more frequently to Birmingham via Warwick Parkway. Toilets, refreshments and ATMs are available.
