Rothéneuf: the points of Rothéneuf and La Varde

This route will take you along the customs officers' path between Rothéneuf and Pont beach, via Pointe de la Varde. Beautiful views of St-Malo bay, with Cézembre and Fort de la Conchée to the west, Île Besnard and Les Chevrets (large and small) to the east.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Davier car park.

(S/E) Exit the car park, cross the avenue carefully, take the path heading east, then take the one on the right and continue straight ahead. Leave Rue Paul Germain on your right, take the path on the right, then another on the right, and rejoin the previous avenue. Cross it carefully, then enter the park.

(1) Take the path on the left towards the Haize Lighthouse, turn left, then right into the cul-de-sac, and rejoin Rue de Jersey. Turn left to continue along the street, and cross the avenue again , carefully. At the crossroads at the end, first turn left then right at the pedestrian crossing to carefully cross Avenue Aristide Olivier. Continue straight on to the museum, leaving the wayside cross on your right.

(2) Pass the museum on your right and continue on the left until you reach Rothéneuf and Place du Canada.

(3) Follow the signs for Cancale/St-Coulomb on the right, taking Rue du Havre. Continue straight ahead until you reach the beach at Havre de Rothéneuf.

(4) On the beach, turn left and walk to the public steps and climb them (they are quite steep). See practical information if the tide is high.

(5) Take the street on the right, which becomes a dirt track. Continue along the track until you reach the chapel and its view of the bay.

(6) Leave the Notre-Dame des Flots chapel via the path. It goes around a restaurant/residence complex. Staying along the coastline, the path joins the "Christ" point.

(7) Continue to Val Beach, staying along the sea.

(8) Take Avenue du Nicet on the right, then right again onto Avenue Ste-Marie. Continue along the coastal path, staying on the edge of the cliff. You can cross the park and rejoin the path at the exit. Follow the path to Pointe de la Varde.

(9) Continue down the path, passing the ruins of the fort. When you reach the road, continue along the path that passes between the houses and leads to the jetty via some steps. Continue to the car park.

End of the GR®34 trail

(10) Leave the seafront by walking along the wall on the left, then follow the street, keeping to the right, until you reach the crossroads. Turn right to join the (S/E).

Toilets at Plage du Val and near the Davier car park.

Havre de Rothéneuf (4): at high tide, the foreshore may be covered. In this case, take the Chemin du Havre (see sign on site).
