Rocher du Bourbet, Waroly caves and waterfalls from Maîche

Starting from Maîche, pass through Les Bréseux to see, in particular, its Comtois-style church with magnificent modern stained glass windows, then on to Rochet du Bourbet, a viewpoint over the Dessoubre valley and picnic area. Return via the QuatreGrottes de Waroly, the Waroly waterfalls and the hamlet of La Lizerne. Several interesting viewpoints: Rochet du Bourbet, on the way down to the Château de l'Ermitage, then on the way back up to the hamlet of La Lizerne, among others.

Description of the walk

Parking is available either at the post office or in the large car park nearby on Rue des Boutons d'Or (starting point of this description).

(S/E) Go up Rue des Boutons d'Or on the right, towards the east, to the next crossroads.

(1) Turn left towards the water treatment plant, then continue straight ahead on the path.

(2) At the crossroads at La Rasse, elevation 744, take the road that curves slightly to the right. Continue straight ahead until you reach the village of Les Bréseux.

(3) At the first crossroads after the Mialettes farm, take the first street on the right, Rue de la Douve. Then turn right, then take thefirst street on the left after the cemetery to reach the church and its former presbytery (town hall building).

(4) From the church and town hall, continue straight ahead, then turn left at the next crossroads. At the crossroads with Rue principale, turn left, then continue straight ahead on Rue du Val and leave Les Bréseux, heading towards Rocher du Bourbet.

(5) At the first crossroads after leaving Les Bréseux, in the hamlet of Les Planchottes, follow the road on the right and continue straight on until you reach the Rocher du Bourbet viewpoint.

(6) From the viewpoint, retrace your steps for 200 metres, then follow the marked path on the right that descends towards Waroly. Join a small road and continue on the left.

(7) Pass the entrance to the private Château de l'Ermitage. At the junction of the road and a forest path on the right, turn right until you reach a turning area for logging trucks just next to it.

(8) To visit the Four Caves of Waroly, located further along, follow the marked path on the right from this small square, going there and back.

(9) After visiting the caves, return to the square.

(8) Turn right towards Orgeans and Waroly Waterfall. Descend into the valley, passing impressive rocks, until you reach the waterfalls.

(10) At the waterfalls, wade across the stream, take the marked path on the left towards Orgeans, and cross a pasture.

(11) When the marked path joins the road at a bend, immediately turn left onto the path that climbs up and then joins the D464. Follow this road carefully for 200 metres due to traffic and lack of protection , before crossing it, again with the utmost caution.

(12) On the other side, take a marked path that climbs to the right. At the next junction with a path on the left, turn right until you reach a place called Sous le Rang.

(13) At thefirst crossroads, take the street on the left, then, in the hamlet of La Lizerne, turn right twice and continue to the D231 crossroads.

(14) Follow it on the left for about 300 metres.

(15) At the crossroads with a path on the right, follow this path until you reach the junction with the D464.

(16) Cross the road carefully as visibility is poor, and take the marked path opposite, which descends to the right and then climbs back up to the D272.

(17) Cross this road carefully, then take the path that climbs to the right and runs alongside the grounds of Mérode Castle.

(18) At the junction of this path with the road, turn right onto the road, then at the second junction, turn left into the housing estate and cross it to reach the post office building and the car park (S/E).

Notes

Next to the church in Les Bréseux, visit the interesting exhibition in the old cellar of the building adjoining the former presbytery, which houses the town hall and a small museum dedicated to the stained glass windows of A. Manessier.

Bring a headlamp to enter the Waroly caves.

This hike is not recommended during hot weather due to the presence of several sections on asphalt and very low water flow in the waterfalls.
