Rocamadour via quiet paths

This circuit allows you to discover Rocamadour as the pilgrims who came on foot did, the causse to the south of the citadel and the Alzou valley with its old mills.

Description of the walk

Access: take the D840 from Martel to Gramat, near Rocamadour. After crossing the D673 and then the D36, turn left into the hamlet of Roumégouse and leave your car there.
Please note! This route is not signposted as such.

(S/E) At the entrance to the hamlet, look for signposts. Follow the yellow markings towards Vallée Alzou, cross the D840 and continue straight ahead until you reach the intersection with a railway line, which you must cross. Continue straight ahead, still towards Vallée Alzou, on a beautiful path that serves several small pastures surrounded by beautiful stone walls. You will arrive at a plateau that offers a beautiful view of the cliffs on the other side of the valley. The path, which joins theGR®®6at this point, begins to descend. Further down, you will find signposts.

(1) This is the start of the circular path. Leave theGR®® and follow the yellow markings on the left towards Gramat/Méjeancerie basse. The path crosses a river bed (dry in mid-September) and then climbs up the other side. At the next intersection, leave the yellow markings which continue straight ahead and take a path on the left.

(2) Two hundred metres further on, turn left onto an unmarked path that climbs perpendicular to the contour lines. This path is wide and well marked and, at least for the time being, signposted with arrows for the Vigan endurance horse race.
The path first turns right at a 90° angle, then left about 500 metres further on. Leave the undergrowth and cross the pastures.

(3) The path soon turns into a small road that must have been tarmaced a long time ago. Follow this road to the tiny village of La Pannonie and climb up to the castle.

(4) Turn right onto a quiet little road that leads away from the castle. You will see a cross after about 500 m. Continue along this road, which offers beautiful views of the Causse. Leave the Mazet road on your right and, further on, ignore a path that leads off to the right towards Rocamadour (elevation 291).

(5) To discover the landscape hidden behind the apparent flatness of the causse, a few dozen metres before a road leading off to the right towards Fouysselaze, take an unmarked path on the left that descends into a small ravine surrounded by large limestone blocks. You will soon come out onto a road (D32) and rejoin theGR®®46.

(6) Take the road on the right. It is busy but you will soon leave it to climb a small rocky hill on the right, following theGR®® markings. After this glimpse of the hidden relief of the causse, return to the small road you left earlier.

(7) TheGR®®46, which you will now follow to Rocamadour, branches off to the left and then turns right just before the junction with the D32 to descend into the Alzou valley. TheGR®® crosses the D32, then turns sharply to the right and runs parallel to it for about 300 m. The citadel of Rocamadour comes into view at a bend in the road.
After a hairpin bend, you come to a small road which you follow. Further on, just before the small bridge, you will see a house decorated in a very original style.

(8) Cross the small bridge and turn right onto anotherGR®®, theGR®®6, which you will follow until the end of the hike. Pass below the citadel, then near the small train station and finally the valley car park. Continue along a track that follows the bottom of the valley, where the Alzou stream is often dry. The limestone walls on either side are covered with woods.

For about 2 km, the path is rather dull, but be patient, it's worth the wait. Further on, the valley narrows into a shallow gorge as the track turns into a path. Although the stream bed is usually dry, the vegetation covering the walls of the damp gorges is lush, with lots of moss and ferns. This beautiful trail passes a series of old ruined mills before going through the last of them, the Moulin de Saut.

(9) Please note that when passing through this mill, you must comply with any prohibitions or restrictions in force. Shortly afterwards, you will come to the intersection of the circular route.

(1) Climb back up the cliff and, following the same route as on the way there, return to the beautiful hamlet of Roumégouse (S/E).

Notes

This hike is classified as difficult due to its length, but there are no technical difficulties. Standard hiking equipment is required.

Please note that the passage through the Moulin du Saut is sometimes modified due to the risk of rockfalls. As a precaution and for safety reasons, the town hall prohibits access and suggests a detour: a variant ofthe GR®®6which joins the route to the Roque Fumade cave.

Precautions: pay attention to the GR®® numbers. The route follows theGR®®46and 6, which intersect at Rocamadour. As the small town is the destination of many pilgrims on the Way of St James, it is only natural that it should be a crossroads for GR®®trails.

Variation: Visit Rocamadour.

Once you reach point (8) and if you wish to visit the sanctuary, this is the time to take a detour of about 1 hour. Cross the bridge and climb theGR®®46opposite. You can descend on the other side of the village by turning right to rejoin the route and theGR®®6at a sharp right-hand bend, near the mini train station. Turn left at the junction with theGR®®.

Worth a visit

In the pastures, during the season, you will see sheep known as "spectacled sheep", i.e. with black patches around their eyes, belonging to the Causses du Lot breed.

Arriving at the village of La Pannonie via the path, you feel as if you have travelled back in time. After pastures still surrounded by low stone walls, beautiful golden stone houses appear, and there is no trace of modernity anywhere. It is only higher up, near the small castle, that a few cars parked in a small car park bring us back to the present day. At point (7), about 100 metres to the right, there is a small dolmen where you can stop for a snack. From here, there is a beautiful view of the Causse.

Visiting the Rocamadour sanctuary is free if you don't take the little train or the lift.

Near the ruins of the mills, observe the canals built parallel to the stream, the ruins of dwellings and the old millstones. The ruins become more and more beautiful as we progress. The last ones, those of the Moulin de Saut, are very beautiful. It seems that this mill was built at the resurgence of the river and on a terrace along the cliff. At this spot, a fountain with green water quietly awaits spring to revive a torrent that will finally pour through these now disused mills.

Before leaving Roumégouse, don't forget to take a look at the beautiful façade of the elegant castle, embellished with splendid door and window frames, and its driveway lined with pretty Roman-style statues.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Not as easy as it looks! Some technical sections, particularly around the ridges, present their own challenges with rocky ground and occasional roots. What's more, 21km is not necessarily accessible to the average person. For experienced riders only!
• Pros: Finish line and view of Rocamadour, ridges, cliffs, shaded areas, old mills and a few single tracks
• Cons: Many wide paths and a large section of tarmac in the "La Pannonie" area.

Hello
A lovely walk. The long tarmac road can be avoided by taking the paths. 700 metres after point 3, turn right towards Granouillat and Mazet.

A circuit without any major difficulties. Not difficult to follow as long as you read the instructions carefully. Avoid in hot weather as part of the route is on the plateau.
We made a short detour via the village of Rocamadour, which didn't add much to the length of the walk.
On the way back, we didn't go back via the Moulin du Saut, but took the GR 6 alternative route just after the Moulin de Tournefeuille.

A beautiful hike with two slightly difficult climbs. We did the whole thing with our smartphones, which worked perfectly.
We didn't stop at Rocamadour because it was too crowded and we still had 7 km to go.
i highly recommend it because of the beautiful scenery.

We started at point 8. Free parking spaces for cars, motorhomes, vans and small trucks along the road. We immediately took the path to the Alzou Valley. Excellent. Temperature for the day: 28 degrees. A cool walk. Old mills: great. Nice layout for crossing the Saut. From there, we admit: we made a mistake. At point 2, after the car park, we followed the PR to find ourselves at the bottom of the path we had taken to get there. It was our fault. In fact, at point 2, one of the directional arrows points to Rocamadour. Bingo, we followed it, forgetting about Viso. At the same time, we had no regrets given the heat. We had a picnic in the shady Alzou valley. Practical information: between point 8 and the Saut mill, allow 2¼-2½ hours. The PR from point 2 runs along the edge of the cliff. It overlooks the Alzou valley: impressive view, to join the GR at the bottom at a bridge, which crosses the Alzou... dry. This point is marked with a star on the map. You can park in the car park between points 1 and 2. This route is easy and pleasant in hot weather. Many thanks to our pathfinder.

The Alzou Valley is very pretty and the Moulin du Saut mill is superb.

A long but varied route. The "causse" section between points 4 and 5 is a little monotonous: the road after the hamlet of La Panonnie is too long and there is no view of the landscape. Otherwise, there are some beautiful stretches before arriving in Rocamadour and the mill trails in the gorges. In August, there is obviously no water. To be redone in the spring if the water is flowing!

This hike, reputed to be difficult, is not difficult at all, except for the excessively long stretch on tarmac, which destroys your feet even with good shoes and even at the end of winter – imagine what it must be like in summer...
I would not recommend this route in its current state. It is better to do a round trip along the Alzou between the bottom of L'Hospitalet and Roumegouse, which is a truly magnificent section.

Overall, the descriptions and map make it easy to follow the route, which is very pleasant. The section through Moulin du Saut has been redeveloped and is now passable. Happy hiking, everyone!

Superb hike with varied landscapes.
The section on the Causse plateau (between points 4 and 5) is perhaps a little long, as it covers almost 3 km on a tarmac road, even though we only encountered two cars.
The final section through the Moulin du Saut has been restored. In any case, we were able to pass through yesterday, everything seems to be under control and we didn't see any signs prohibiting access.

Thank you for this hike, which we loved.

A very pleasant hike with varied landscapes. No particular difficulty. Clear and easy to follow trail.

The passage through the Moulin du Saut was open again (July 2017), avoiding the detour via the GR variant.
