Roc de Sant Salvador from Montalbà d'Amélie

A very beautiful circular with a variety of trails. An exceptional view from the rock over Roussillon, the Canigou massif and Spain. The hike is particularly technical with many difficult passages. You must pay close attention to the trail. Access to the peak itself is reserved for experienced hikers: there is a 5-metre descent that is extremely difficult to navigate without a rope. With these warnings in mind, this is one of the most beautiful hikes in Vallespir.
Visorando app recommended.

Description of the walk

From Amélie-les-Bains, take the road to the hamlet of Montalbà: easy parking.

(S/E) On the grassy slope, take the GR®10 trail, which climbs towards the south-east. Reach the junction with a path that climbs to the right.

(1) Continue on the GR®10, ignoring the "Roc Saint-Sauveur" sign. You will come out onto a forest track at a hairpin bend.

(2) Continue on the GR®10 towards Coll Cerda. Pass close to the ruins of el Molli Serrador and reach the pass, a pretty grassy plateau.

(3) Leave the GR®10 and turn right onto a small path that climbs towards the rock. There are now blue markings: follow them carefully.

(4) Follow the blue markings down to the left to leave the ridge. From this point onwards, there are numerous technical sections that are not particularly difficult, but caution is advised nonetheless. You will arrive at the foot of Roc Sant Salvador. On your right, there are steps carved into the rock face. It is not "very" difficult to climb to the summit.

(5) Please note that the descent is only suitable for experienced climbers to avoid getting stuck at the summit. Continue to follow the blue markings to begin the descent.

(6) Continue straight ahead, leaving the path coming from (1) on your right. Descend on the left, now following the blue and yellow trail markers. The descent is difficult in a beautiful scree slope.

(7) At the end of the descent, turn left. Climb back up to the small pass in the scree, continuing to follow the blue markings.

(8) Begin a long, fairly easy and varied descent, making sure to follow the yellow markings. You will reach a trail junction at a small, unnamed pass.

(9) Continue the descent on the left, following the yellow trail markers. At first, these are not very visible, so a GPS device will be useful. Join a forest track.

(10) Take it on the right. The track becomes tarmac and rejoins the GR®10. Pass the Moulin de la Paleta and continue until you reach the Mas de la Fergassa, located in a hollow on the left.

(11) Leave the road and turn right, staying on the GR®10, which is almost flat with more beautiful views. Return to the car park at Montalba (S/E).

Yes, a beautiful route that I (re)did today (08/12/25) under the winter sun!
This hike is probably classified as "very difficult" because a small section involves a technical descent. However, it should be noted that it is possible to avoid this section by going around the ROC on the south side, in which case there are no difficulties along the route. Of course, there is still the beautiful "climb" in the final approach to the Roc itself (25% gradient for about half an hour!). A real treat!
Best regards,
