Prats-de-Mollo to Sant Guillem via Puig Fabra - Les Sarraïns - Serre Vernet

Thisfirst stage, almost entirely in the forest, is therefore possible in summer, if you set off early.
A challenging hike with 1,275 metres of elevation gain on marked trails that are rarely used, requiring a good sense of direction and the GPX track.
There are some beautiful spots to stop and enjoy the scenery.
The highest point (altitude 1,830 m) at Puig dels Sarraïns is a perfect place to stop for lunch, for example.

Description of the walk

From Perpignan, head towards Le Boulou, then take the D115 to Céret , Amèlie-les-Bains and Prats-de-Mollo-La Preste. Cross the Techriver at Prats, at the roundabout that follows, turn right towards La Preste on the D115A and immediately turn right into the large car park along the Tech river.

(S/E) Head up towards the road bridge over the Tech river.

Yellow and red markings

(1) Turn left onto the pavement over the bridge and arrive at the entrance to the fortified town.

(2) Go up the steep stone steps opposite, then take the cobbled street and continue to the south-east corner of the cemetery wall.

Yellow signposts

(3) Go up a path along the cemetery wall. At thefirst fork, go sharply right and head north until you reach a crossroads (near a road on the right).

(4) Cross the track and climb up opposite, then after 60 m, keep right in the forest. Cross the stream (signpost) on a small fragile bridge, and turn right, climbing steeply, still in the forest. Pass another stream (signpost) and join a track suitable for vehicles (elevation 971).

(5) Cross it and continue climbing. In a right-hand bend, pass an old snow well on the right and a hollow on the left. Turn left and continue climbing steeply to reach a pass (known as Cabanelles) with four tracks and the arrival path. Various directional posts. Livestock enclosure on the right.

(6) Turn right towards Sant Guillem, taking the first grassy track that descends slightly for exactly 480 m until you reach a fork that is not marked on the maps.

(7) Take care. Leave the horizontal track that continues straight ahead (old yellow cross on a tree on the left). Turn right onto a narrower track that continues downhill (old yellow markings).

The yellow markings have been partially repainted recently. Please note: there are numerous trees and obstacles across the path.

(8) Leave the track (altitude 1060 m), continue straight ahead on the path, pass the Còrrec de la Freixeneda and continue straight ahead, heading north, still slightly downhill. Follow the yellow markings carefully .

(9) Pass the Còrrec de la Figuera (altitude 1010 m). Leave a path that levels out to the right. Now follow a path that climbs steeply in zigzags. Pass the ruins of Mas de l'Arnau. Turn north and continue the very steep climb to the ridge in an open area of former pasture (observed in early July 2025). There are dilapidated wooden signposts on the right on a tree.

(10) Caution: no markings. Do not go up to the left into the forest; the path on the IGN map has not existed for a long time.
Continue straight ahead for a few metres and
turn left (altitude 1,360 m), looking for the start of the path in the beech forest between the rock face on the left and a rock on the right (cairn visible a little further on). Now follow the old yellow markings, heading north. Further on, pass an old developed area called La Creueta (terrace and ruins at an elevation of 1397 m). Climb up to the left (rocks) and immediately rejoin the beautiful forest trail, which climbs slightly. This will bring you to a flat area still in the forest at a clearly marked fork. There is a large cairn and wooden signpost on the left (altitude 1,390 m).

Off the trail
(11) You can go straight to Cal Picotós de Baix (yellow trail) and keep following the directions.
- Turn left towards Puig dels Sarraïns. Start a steady climb with some really nice views until you get to a pass on a ridge. It 's a beautiful spot with great scenery. ( altitude 1,705 m).

Yellow markings areclearly visible

(12) After a break, if desired, turn right and climb steadily, following the yellow markings very carefully on this wooded ridge, which is gradually becoming overgrown with low vegetation. You will come out onto an open pasture that is still in use. Go around the summit on the right and reach it by turning left for a short detour to Puig dels Sarraïns (altitude 1830 m). Magnificent 360° landscape with views stretching far into the distance.

(13) Turn around and head left, due north, without descending into the forest. Stay on the ridge, following the yellow markings on the rocks. Pay attention to the markings so as not to descend to the right into the forest. Follow the path that curves to the left until you find a large cairn on the left at the start of a small pasture (altitude 1,790 m).

Yellow and red GRP® Tour du Vallespirmarkings

(14) Turn right in this open area and follow a well-marked path that climbs slightly into the forest to reach the pasture area of Coll de Serre Vernet (altitude 1798 m). This is a large, beautiful spot for a break. Very beautiful landscape. Directional signpost.

Yellow and red markings for the GRP® Tour du Vallespir and GRP® Tour du Canigou

(15) Take care, confusing area. Turn 90° to the right, following the yellow and red markings. Enter the forest and begin a gentle descent on this beautiful GRP®.

(16) Be careful, turn completely left (altitude 1,715 m), staying on this beautiful GRP® trail. After a nice descent, you will reach a new open area at a crossroads of trails at Coll Baixó (altitude 1,472 m). Directional signpost.

(17) Head right, south, onto the trail, which is open and flat at first. Then start descending and follow two switchbacks to join another trail at Cal Picotós de Baix. Directional signpost. (altitude 1355 m). Arrival of the possible variant.

(18) Continue descending towards Sant Guillem. You will arrive at a flat area. There is an orientation table on the left, a cross on the right and the chapel of Sant Guillem opposite (altitude 1,330 m).

Off the trail

(19) Go around the chapel and the house on the right. Please respect the site and its inhabitants. You will come out onto a track. Follow it to the right. At the first bend to the left, continue straight ahead, crossing an electric fence, which you should close behind you. Go down the steps and you will come out onto the terrace of the Refuge de Sant Guillem, today's stop (E).
