Departure from the Croix de Lorraine car park in Graye-sur-Mer. This cross marks General de Gaulle's return to French soil on 14 June 1944. As indicated on a sign, Field Marshal Montgomery, Winston Churchill and King George VI also passed through this breach.
(S/E) Go to the monument, then head down to the beach and walk west (to the left as you descend from the monument) for 2 km until you reach an old blockhouse that has been washed away (it is now on the foreshore due to coastal erosion). After the blockhouse, head to the Brèche du Bisson.
(1) At the Brèche du Bisson, follow the red and whiteGR® markings along the beach, continuing westwards. You will reach the Ver-sur-Mer sea wall, which offers a beautiful view.
(2) Turn left onto Avenue de Provence. Cross the D514 carefully and continue along Avenue de Provence until you reach the D112b at the hamlet of La Rivière. Turn left onto the D112b and continue for 100 metres.
(3) Turn right onto Rue des Stins, which climbs slightly to a grassy path on the left that follows the power line. The path offers views of the sea and, in good weather, Le Havre. Continue straight ahead on this path. At the end of this straight section, turn left to descend towards the D112b.
(4) Take the D112b on the right to the hamlet of Vaux. Watch out for traffic on this less interesting part of the walk.
(5) In the hamlet of Vaux, take the street on the left before the big bend, then go around a right-hand bend and a left-hand bend.
(6) Turn right onto a grassy path. It can be muddy when it rains. It runs alongside a small canal and emerges after passing through a gate. Continue straight ahead, then turn left towards the D514, which you can cross (traffic lights). Leave the campsite on your left and its car park on your right, then turn right onto theGR® trail, which winds through the dunes to reach the Croix de Lorraine, visible from afar. (S/E)
