Pierre Impie and Roc de l'Aigle

Hiking is not recommended between 15 February and 15 June due to nesting.

A demanding hike, but one that offers splendid views, from the Durance and Buech valleys to the Pic de Bure, the Écrins, the Massif de l’Estrop, the Verdon and Lure.

Description of the walk

You can start from the cross at Les Bastides, but there is little parking: two or three spaces at most. You can park a little further down, on the road to Bevons.

(S/E) With your back to the Bastides buildings, take the forest track which slopes downwards further on to the left and leads to the junction with a marked path.

(1) Turn right, following the markings, towards the Pas de l’Essaillon and head towards it.

(2) Turn left onto the path, changing sides of the slope. After a few metres, leave the descending path to walk along the cliff face. The route along the rock face is very steep but well-marked. A few well-placed cairns help with navigation. Reach the junction with an ascending path, marked in yellow.

(3) Turn left to continue the climb, which remains very steep, towards the summit of the Pierre Impie.

(4) You can make a round trip to the summit of the Pierre Impie: look for yellow markings on the rock. Otherwise, continue along the marked path towards the Roc de l'Aigle. Further on, the path begins a descent towards a small pass at the foot of the Roc de l'Aigle and reaches a junction.

(5) Leave thePR®® which climbs to the right and head left, up the slope. This very steep path is marked in yellow and joins a track suitable for vehicles. Follow this track to the left for 150 to 200 m, and at the bend, take the yellow-marked path on the left. This crosses some streams, then descends along a small ridge to reach the Chapel of Saint-Bevon, a ruined chapel in the middle of a forest consisting mainly of pine trees.
Continue along the path to the junction: PR®® signpost.

(6) Take the marked path on the left, heading north. Reach a junction, located about fifty metres from the Pas de l'Essaillon (2), and turn right to follow the path back up the hill, in the opposite direction, to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

This hike is demanding and difficult: a map or GPS is strongly recommended, and good walking boots are essential.
The climb between points (2) and (3) is steep and largely off-trail.
The descent between points (4) and (5) is challenging: very steep and slippery.
No water, no shelter. In any case, this hike should not be attempted in bad weather.

Worth a visit

(2) The Pas de l’Essaillon marks the transition from the sunny to the shady side. You find yourself beneath the cliff (equipped for climbing).

(4) La Pierre Impie: this rock features a cliff face about a hundred metres high. It is visible from everywhere north of Sisteron. At the summit there is a magnificent view of the Écrins massif, the Pic de Bure, the Durance and Buëch valleys, the Gâche mountain, etc.

Saint-Bevon Chapel: a tiny, ruined chapel of little interest... but a sign explains the origins of Saint-Bevon and the name Pierre Impie.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

With the weather forecast predicting temperatures below 30°C, I thought that starting the hike late in the morning would be fine. What's more, I decided not to take a hat! That was a bad decision, because starting out on the path that climbs up to the Col de St-Pensier in the blazing sun was tough going. Fortunately, after that, we were in the forest or in shaded areas, in the shadow of the cliffs.
A few comments:
Yes, the description of this hike as "Very difficult" is an exaggeration, but "Difficult" is certainly accurate. It's fine up to the Pas de l'Essayon, but after that, it's really steep. This is not a hike for everyone. Fortunately, you are in the shade of the cliff, which means you don't suffocate.
Point (5) in the details tab of the file: the trail passes through hill 1017. From there, I lost track. So I went straight down through the thickets of the woods, thinking that in any case, I would have to cut across the trail leading to St-Bevon Chapel. Which was the case.
When I reached the signpost mentioned, there were several paths in different directions. I wanted to see the chapel, which was 50 m away, so I took a path that went downhill. After about 200 m, I decided to turn back and give up on the chapel. Following the directions, I took another path that climbed very slightly, which was supposed to lead me to Pas de l'Essayon. After a few minutes, as the path began to climb steeply, I checked my route on the topographical map. I was climbing towards elevation 1005. So I retraced my steps back to the signpost. There, I realised my mistake: the directions given were slightly off. To get to Pas de l'Essayon, the first trail was the right one.
Other than that, I was very happy to have done this hike.

Hello, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the hike. Several people have told me that I exaggerate the difficulty of the hike a little. Of course, for experienced hikers, there is no danger. However, I don't want to encounter inexperienced people or those wearing flip-flops. The hike can be confusing due to the steepness of some sections and the complexity of reading the route on the descent and through the woods until you find the marked trail. So I'd rather you think I'm exaggerating a little!
Enjoy the rest of the summer, best regards, Bernard

It was a hot day, and we started the hike at 7 a.m. The route is relatively shaded until you reach the Pas de l'Essaillon (Pt2). After admiring the view at the end of the small ridge to the right of the Pas de l'Essaillon, the hike really begins. I decided to do it backwards, and it was a steep climb up to the Roc de l'Aigle, but the view of the valleys was magnificent. A visit to the summit of the Pierre Impie is a must, then descend passing under the 120m of the Pierre Impie and its climbing routes.
It's a steep and sometimes exposed hike, so you need good footwear, but it's never dangerous. Neither the distance nor the elevation gain are excessive, so this hike is more suited to a "difficult" (or even "moderate") level. A superb hike, to be repeated before sunrise...

Please be aware of the nesting season for birds of prey on the cliffs of Pierre Impie and Roc de l'Aigle (15 February to 15 June). The FFME asks climbers not to visit the area during this period; the same applies to walkers

A lovely walk. It’s certainly steep, but you never feel as though you’re ‘out in the open’. You do, of course, need to be sure-footed, but provided you are, the ‘difficult’ rating seems more appropriate (the walk was completed by two septuagenarians, one of whom has titanium knees!)
Thank you to the author of this walk, who allowed us to enjoy some splendid scenery.

Hello, this hike was a bit different in terms of the start (from Chatillon, further north) and the finish, but the main part was the same, with the same route along the ridge. Yet another hike classified as ‘very difficult’, when it would actually be more in the ‘slightly difficult’ category, as Sombardier says; the paths are sometimes steep with a few rugged sections, but without any real difficulty or danger.
