Short circular loop in Banne

The village of Banne is charming and the view from the ruins of the castle, destroyed during the Revolution, is quite breathtaking. The walk described here is very short and easy, unless you prefer not to walk on a stony path. Perfect as a pre-dinner or after-dinner stroll.

Description of the walk

Park on the Place de l'Église by the fountain.

(S/E) Take the road leading down to the right towards the cemetery and turn onto a paved path that descends to the left along the cemetery wall (signposted as Chemin du Ranquet). Follow it to the tarmac road leading to the sewage treatment plant.

(1) Just opposite this junction with the road, take a small path that runs alongside it and then crosses a tiny stream. Begin the climb back up towards the village along a very stony path. You’ll soon reach a concrete path that runs just below the village houses on the castle side and leads to a square surrounded by lime trees situated right at the foot of the castle.

(2) From this square, it’s worth getting lost in the narrow streets and stairways leading up to the castle’s esplanades (so you don’t need to follow the marked route to the letter). From the various accessible esplanades (part of the ruins is off-limits), enjoy the views over the village, towards the Païolive woods and, more broadly, the southern Ardèche. Head back down to the lime tree square via the street that skirts the hill (a very beautiful viewpoint there too).

(2) From this square, you can easily reach the Place de l’Église via the road (D251) (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 278 m - Place de l'Église
  2. 1 : km 0.45 - alt. 226 m - Road to the sewage treatment plant
  3. 2 : km 0.88 - alt. 264 m - Make way for the lime trees
  4. S/E : km 1.86 - alt. 278 m - Finish at the church square

Notes

Parking available on the Place de l'Église or in a car park below the church.
Shops and restaurants in the village of Banne.
No particular difficulties except at the bottom of the sewage treatment plant, where the path is a bit stony and therefore requires suitable footwear.
Avoid this hike in heavy rain as it clearly follows drainage channels which are likely to become small torrents.

A lovely circular walk to explore Banne; what’s more, I was lucky enough to have a chat with the mayor about reinforcing the walls of the old castle

Discovering the chapel is a highlight of the walk. There are some lovely views too. There’s a short stretch back along the main road. Fortunately, it’s not too long.

A lovely little route that lets you explore this beautiful hilltop village, which I’d been admiring from below for a long time.
The route takes you across the two hills on which it stands: one part of the village is clustered at the foot of the castle, the other around the church.
The local council and the “Les Amis de Banne” association have set up a “visitors’ trail” marked with very interesting information panels, allowing you to explore the restored sections and the secured ruins of Banne Castle at your leisure. There’s an orientation table and a superb panoramic view at the eastern end of the terrace.
Thank you for sharing this.

A pleasant walk around the village of Banne, offering a chance to explore the surrounding countryside and the castle ruins. Shaded on the first half, sunny on the second.
