The start is from the car park above the Rousset tennis courts. There is shade!
(S/E) Cross the road and pass the cemetery. Follow the stony path uphill (obviously). This is a Way of the Cross, marked by fourteen wrought iron crosses ("stations", numbered from I to XIV) leading to the chapel.
The climb, which starts off gently, becomes a little steeper but is still easy going. Allow between 30 and 50 minutes to reach the chapel. The view from the top is lovely.
(1) For the descent, you can take the same route or make a loop as described below.
Go around the chapel and take the path that plunges through the woods towards the Merdari (a small stream that can be refreshing even in July). Be careful, the descent is sometimes difficult, but it is short (barely 15 minutes).
(2) After the stream, go back up the path opposite (15 minutes) to go around the Jouana, a mountain on the left.
(3) Continue to go around Les Courlisses. Always keep left.
(4) You will come to a gate. This path will take you back to the village of Rousset-les-Vignes in 30 minutes. Cross the village (narrow streets, church, wash house) to reach the car park (S/E).
Short hike, interesting if you don't have much time...
) with poor balance or knee problems. Personally, I quickly fell behind an Irish au pair who was walking as if she were on a treadmill at the supermarket
while I struggled with my little chicken legs, but hey, I'm just starting out
. Once at the top, the view is magnificent, and you can sit down and admire the panorama.
. When I reached the bottom of the path behind the chapel, I could still hear her shouting at the top of her lungs: GUéPARD!!!
