Mount Ōyama

This hike up Mount Ōyama is a popular day trip from Tokyo that combines mountain scenery, cultural sites, and panoramic views. Starting from the Oyama Cable Bus Stop, hikers can either take a cable car or climb through forested paths and stone steps to reach Ōyama Afuri Shrine. From there, the trail continues to the summit, with opportunities to enjoy views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding region. After reaching the peak, hikers can either retrace their steps or descend the opposite side of the mountain toward Hinata, where views of Tokyo accompany much of the descent. Overall, it's a moderately challenging hike that blends nature, history, spectacular viewpoints, and many many steps!

Description of the walk

Start: To reach the start of the Mount Ōyama hike, take a bus from Isehara Station to the Oyama Cable Bus Stop.

(S) From here, you can either walk up to the cable car, which will take you directly to Oyama Afuri Shrine, or follow the trail on foot.
Follow the shaded paths and climb the many stone steps to reach Ōyama-dera Temple.

(1) After exploring the temple, continue up the steps to one of the main attractions of the hike, Oyama Afuri Shrine.

(2) Once you arrive at Oyama Afuri Shrine, take some time to explore the area, browse the shops, enjoy some matcha, and take in the beautiful views. After a well-earned rest, continue past the shrine and follow the main trail toward the summit.

(3) Be sure to stop at this viewpoint, as it offers some of the best views of Mount Fuji on a clear day and makes for a great photo opportunity. Once you have admired the scenery, continue up the steps toward the summit of Mount Ōyama.

(4) Congratulations, you've reached the summit! Take some time to rest, have a snack, and enjoy the views before beginning your descent. You can either return the way you came and catch a bus from the Oyama Cable Bus Stop, or continue down the opposite side of the mountain toward Hinata.

(5) As you make your way down, the upper section of the trail offers expansive views towards Tokyo. The trail gradually becomes more shaded as you descend into the forest. Take care in this section, as there is some loose gravel underfoot.

(6) After passing the abandoned building, turn right onto the road. From here, the hike is complete; follow the road to the bus stop.(E)

Depending on where you are staying, be sure to check that the bus from Hinata will take you to a convenient connection for your destination.
