Maquis Chaumard

A lovely hike in the footsteps of the Maquis, alternating between hedged farmland and forest, with beautiful panoramic views, especially of Lac de Pannecière.

Description of the walk

Start: Start from Chaumard church.

Waymarkers: The hiking trails are wide and well-marked with yellow markings.

(S/E) With your back to the church, to the right of the restaurant/crêperie, follow the road up behind the village. Continue on a track which soon turns northeast.

(1) About 900m after the start, leave the grassy path on the right, after the meadow, and continue straight ahead on the path shared with the GR® (red and white markings).

(2) At the end of the climb, continue straight ahead on the asphalt road.

(3) At the end of Les Quatre Vents, turn right and continue on a track.

(4) At the hut, follow the forest road to the right and leave the GR®.

(5) In the deciduous forest, at the crossroads of forest roads, take the first right at 90 degrees, towards the stream. Several signs indicate the path leading down to the Chaumard maquis monument.

(6) Continue downhill, South-West facing, to reach a stone tablet at the maquis de Chaumard.

(7) At the main road, turn right and follow it.

(8) Keeping an eye on the yellow signs, leave the road and turn right into the forest. After climbing for about 800m, catch up with the main road and follow it to the left. Ignore a road on the left which leads down to La Courcelle.

(9) After leaving the asphalt road, take the dirt track which continues it, leaving the path on the right.

(1) Turn left to reach the village (S/E).

A beautiful route with a lot of effort required on the climbs. We took a break near the monument in the maquis (a must-see). The scenery is indeed very beautiful, with views of the lake and the countryside. We met very few people, so it's good exercise for the body and mind.
I'd definitely recommend it.

A beautiful walk, the forest is magnificent and there are lots of flowers, but because of the vegetation we only saw the lake at the end. The stele commemorating the Chaumard maquis was an emotional moment, and at the end we took the road back to avoid the last climb.
A dog followed us from the start and left us on the way back, as is his custom, it seems.
I recommend this hike.

Lovely walk, great views of the Morvan massif. One tricky section, however, near the monument to the Resistance, as the path had been destroyed by forestry activities (large skidders were present) and there was a long descent with unsecured stones on the ground. This walk, categorised as medium level, is more difficult than expected. The first climb was a real leg-breaker, but after that it was fine. The end, on the other hand, finished me off, if I do say so myself.

A pleasant walk with some beautiful woodland sections.
Unclear signposting at point 3: instead of turning right, just follow the signs and take the road opposite.
A small regret as there is no view of the Lac de Panicière.
Distance underestimated (over 10 km) and time slightly overestimated.

A pleasant, fairly shady walk through forests and some pastures. Lots of birdsong! On the other hand, there's no view of Lac de Panicière and the last three kilometres are on tarmac roads. A word of advice: don't follow the signs after the Maquis stele and stay on the Chaumard road. The signs in the forest lead you up a steep incline and then onto a tarmac road that goes on for ages and is of no interest. Good footwear is required for descending the very stony paths.

A very fine walk, alternating beautiful Morvan landscapes, fine views of the lake and deciduous and fir forests.
Great discovery of the Chaumard scrubland.

Very nice walk. Magnificent scenery. Moving moment in front of the stele.
As this walk is offered by the town, I'd like to make a small comment. On this walk we came across 1 buggy at full speed (on the forest road section) and 3 quads (on the way up to the stele). The 1st was dangerous (fast), the other 3 destroyed the footpath. And I don't know what all the fuss is about, near a funerary stele.... Would it be possible to put up barriers to prevent access?

good hike, beautiful scenery over the lake of Panecière and the haut folin. but with a few passages on the road, the length of the hike needs to be reviewed?

A lovely little hike to do when you've got half a day to spare.
The Morvan landscape, the view of the lake, the streams and the river (the Houssière) that flows into the lake....
The descent to the remains of the maquis is pleasant and the place where our maquis members lived and died (some of them) is moving.

I can confirm that it is impossible to take the descent after the Maquis stele. Otherwise a superb walk with a magnificent view of the two valleys from Les Quatre Vents. There's a welcoming bench at the same spot where you can take a short break and enjoy the peace and quiet... I can still see myself there!

Very nice walk, even if the part before the scrubland has been off-limits for a few months. We took it anyway, but it was indeed difficult to walk on certain sections because of the many fallen trees. Otherwise, we "cut out" before the end because we were a bit fed up with being in the forest, so we preferred the rpute!

A very fine walk, especially in fine weather, a little steep at the end.
