Levada do Castelejo

Park at the end of the hamlet of Terra do Baptisto, at the end of the Caminho do Caldeirao.

(S) Take the signposted path up the Levada, passing the base of the pool at the side of the road. Walk up the canal for 4-5 km, which is not particularly difficult, but be careful towards the end when you have to go around a large rock (signposted): the path can be slippery. Reach a pool.

(1) Take the footbridge and continue up the other side. The path is in good condition with many steps. Take a rollercoaster ride downhill and then uphill to reach the small hamlet of Lombo Grande.

(2) Follow the signs opposite for Sao Roque do Faial. Go straight downhill and then, at the end of the road, take a staircase on the left that descends towards the next slope, to the west. At the bottom of the stairs, at the foot of a pool, you will come to another canal.

(3) Follow it until you reach the village of Sao Roque do Faial (E).

(S) There is no public transport to Terra do Baptisto, so you will have to take a taxi back to the village from Sao Roque do Faial (E).
(1) At the pool: you can take a dip if you're brave, but be careful, it's cold.
