Levada da Silveira

Located below the famous PR®9 - Levada da Caldeirao Verde, this levada is much quieter and less crowded. The trail is not difficult, but caution is advised as, unlike the PR®9, there are no protective barriers. There are very few passages on the trail that are prone to vertigo, they are mainly located at the end and are less than 10 metres long. At the end of this levada, there is no large waterfall as on the PR®9, but a small waterfall surrounded by vegetation.

The elevation gain shown on the information sheet is overestimated: allow for around 100 metres. As a result, allow for around four hours of walking time.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park located in a recess in the road (start of the trail, DFCI type, with space on the sides to park cars) located a little higher than the start (5 m).

(S/E) Follow the path along the Levada. After walking for 1 km, you will come to two gates (about 200 m apart) which are not locked and are intended to keep chickens in. Go through them and continue to a small tunnel.

(1) Go through it (a head torch is highly recommended, otherwise your phone torch will do), then continue along the path. In the last section, the view opens up towards the horizon and you can see the sea in the distance. The path climbs a little until you reach the waterfall.

(2) The waterfall is certainly not as impressive as the one on the PR®9, but it is much more pleasant and less crowded. Turn around and follow the path back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Do not take into account the calculated elevation gain, as the actual elevation gain is only about 100 metres. The duration is greatly overestimated: we did the round trip in 3 hours.

Shaded path, to be avoided in rainy weather due to the risk of slipping.

The trail is free of charge.
