The vineyards of the Moselle hills around Metz

Discover the slopes of the Moselle AOC by bike through the vineyards and cellars of our local winegrowers in the Metz region, with stops at Robert Schuman's house, the Gallo-Roman aqueduct and the memorial to the Battle of Dornot-Corny. The return journey will follow the Voie Bleue along the banks of the Moselle. Warning: this route is quite technical, especially on the way there, and uses stony paths. It can be dangerous in wet conditions, so don't forget your protective gear and take care.

Description of the route

Departure from the Town Hall of Ban-Saint-Martin, Avenue Henri II.

(S/E) Follow Rue du Moulinl'Avenue du Général de Gaulle towards Longeville les Metz, then turn right onto theN103W, Rue du Maréchal Foch.

(1) At the roundabout, turn left onto Rue du Fort, towards Mont Saint-Quentin via the tourist route. At the three-way junction, keep right and, after a few hairpin bends, you will reach the entrance to the Bismarck Tower.

(2) Continue along the road for about 300 metres until you reach Allée des Pins on the left.

(3) Take this road and at the end of the paved road, turn left downhill and follow the path. At the crossroads, turn right onto Chemin des Cents Livres and follow it. Pass the first vineyards and you will come to a crossroads with a wayside cross.

(4) Go down the Route Touristique (D103w) and Rue du Saint-Quentin on the left. At the small square on the right with a crucifix, take the path on the right. Admire the vineyards between Scy-Chazelles and Lessy. At the end of the path, go down to the left for about 100 metres.

(5) At the crossroads, turn left (Chemin des Braves), then turn left onto Route de Lessy (D103g) and join Rue de Vignes on the right.

(6) Turn onto this road, then continue along Rue de Moulins. Halfway up the hill, don't miss Place de l'Europe and Robert Schuman's house on your left. Return to Rue du Moulin.

(7) Continue left and stop after the right-hand bend at Moulin.

(8) Pass the Molozay cellars, then turn left and continue to the bottom of Rue de la Gare.

(9) Cross Rue de Verdun (M603) and continue straight ahead. Go around the town hall, then, at the intersection of Ruelle des Écoles and Rue de la Mairie, continue left until you reach the church and the castle.

(10) Turn right onto Rue des Moulins, cross Saint-Ruffine following Chemin des Bruyères, then Grand'Rue.

(11) At the roundabout, turn left onto Rue de Metz and continue until you reach Rue de la Taye on your left, in the centre of Jussy.

(12) Take this road, then turn right shortly afterwards onto Rue de la Fontaine. Leave the village and follow the GR®5 straight ahead. At the fork with a cross on the left, turn right and you will soon reach a three-way junction.

(13) Turn right through the vineyard, then turn left downhill and enter Vaux via Rue des Vignes. Continue along Rue du Grand Lavoir until you reach Place de la Mairie.

(14) Turn right and left and follow the lane closed to all vehicles (Route Du Châté). Drive alongside the schools and continue to a fork. Turn left down Route du Bois la Dame until you reach a left-hand bend.

(15) In the bend, turn right onto Chemin de la Raille, then continue straight ahead south until you reach the first houses in Saint-Paul. Turn left (Chemin Saint-Vincent) and continue to a large crossroads.

(16) Turn right onto Rue Georges Clémenceau (M6). After the Ars-Sur-Moselle bus stops, you will arrive at a large roundabout.

(17) Continue straight ahead on the D6, Rue du Bois Le Prêtre, towards Ancy-sur-Moselle and join Rue du Bassin Romain on the right, a few metres before the aqueduct at the entrance to a narrow cul-de-sac.

(18) Take this road, then turn left at the top of the street.

(19) You will see the Gallo-Roman basin at the top under a metal shelter. Continue along the path until you reach the first houses of Ancy-sur-Moselle, then a crossroads.

(20) Turn right onto Rue Bernard Toussaint, continue along Rue Jean Le Coullon, Rue de Lorraine and Rue Ferdinand Guepratte until you reach Place Foch.

(21) Turn right onto Route de Gorze and follow the road until you reach the vineyard above the village.

(22) Turn around and return to Place Foch.

(21) Turn right, then immediately left onto Rue Amiral Guepratte. At the next intersection, turn right onto Rue du Moulin Bas, then quickly left onto Rue des Gravillons. Drive alongside the cemetery, then continue straight ahead onto Chemin du Gravillon to arrive in the village of Dornot.

(23) Turn right, uphill (Grand Rue), then left onto Rue des Gauvaines. Continue along the path through the vineyards and orchards towards Chemin du Raz. At the end, continue along Rue André Ballard in Novéant until you reach the junction with Rue de la Chavée.

(24) Go down to the left and at the stop sign opposite No. 80, turn left onto Rue Foch and continue to the station.

(25) Take the cycle path that goes around the station on your right, go under the railway tracks and take the footbridge on the left at the end of the tunnel. Cross the Moselle towards Corny, then turn left onto the Voie Bleue towards Metz. Go around the campsite and continue towards the Parcours historique de la bataille de Dornot Corny (historical trail of the Battle of Dornot Corny). Pass by the memorial.

(26) After the commemorative stele, pass the Bois du Fer à Cheval stele and continue along the banks of the Moselle. You will reach the remains of the towpath and then the Roman aqueduct on the east side.

(27) Continue along the village of Jouy-aux-Arches.

(28) When you reach a barrier, turn left onto a bridge over the Moselle Canal and continue along the riverbank until you reach the bend after passing under the railway bridge.

(29) The greenway leaves the riverbank and heads towards the ponds, then rejoins it and crosses a bridge over the Moselle.

(30) Go under the bridge, then cross the Moselle and, at the end of the bridge, take a sharp right and go down to the Moselle. Follow it on your right along the Voie Bleue towards Metz until after the Le Ban Saint-Martin sign, on the left before the footbridge over the canal.

(31) Turn left, go under the railway tracks and head towards the Ban-Saint-Martin town hall (S/E).
