The Valats and the Saint-Côme Mill in Clarensac

This short walk starting from Clarensac will take you, through a few small valleys, along the south-facing slopes of this part of the Vaunage region and on to the Moulin de Saint-Côme, an ideal spot to enjoy a beautiful view over the plain and as far as the Pic-Saint-Loup.

Description of the walk

Park between the football stadium and the sports hall, on Impasse des Crouzettes.

(S/E) Opposite the sports hall, turn right to join the greenway at the end of the cul-de-sac.

(1) Ignore the return route on the left and turn right onto the greenway, which climbs alongside a stream. At the end of the greenway, follow the pavement on the right for a few metres, then cross the RD103 with care to head up towards the hills via a small road running perpendicular to it, the Chemin du Moulin. Follow it to the junction with the Chemin de la Carrière Vieille.

(2) Carry on straight ahead, go through the gate and head up towards the hill along a path marked with a yellow sign. Ignore the track that turns right towards the vineyards and, once above the vineyards, turn left down a slightly slippery path towards a stream (yellow markings). Reach the stream bed at a small tufa waterfall.

(3) Follow the stream upstream, keeping to the left bank and avoiding thePR® (yellow markings), which heads straight up towards the RD1. You may need to walk close to the stream bed at times (waterproof footwear is advisable in wet weather).
Take a wide bend to the left, then a slightly steep section over flat rocks. The path then climbs to the right and heads into the heath overlooking this gully. Follow the single track to the RD1.

(4) Cross the road very carefully – be warned, visibility is limited on this bend. Climb up the opposite side to join aPR® trail marked in yellow. Head down to the left, following the road for a few metres, then turn right onto a path that winds down the hillside like a balcony.
Ignore thePR® fork to the left and continue straight on along the unmarked path to a meadow at the bottom of the valley.

(5) Cross this meadow by following the single track opposite uphill, then cross the Valat de la Font des Canons near a striking depression on the right. Climb up the opposite slope, staying on the track furthest to the right, and after a short steep climb you’ll reach the ruins of an old chapel at a junction. This is the Chapelle Saint-Roman.
Continue straight on along the yellow-marked path towards the Font de Bonnet. After a short, pleasant descent, you’ll reach this lovely spring, which has a stone picnic table.

(6) At the Font de Bonnet, turn right then immediately head left uphill towards the Capitelle de Brignolle. The path is quite steep and rugged in this section, but it is relatively short. Once the slope levels out, pass close to this ruined drystone shelter, then reach a junction.
Turn left towards the Moulin de Saint-Côme. Stay on the main path through this winding woodland, following the yellow markings to the mill’s viewpoint, which offers a lovely open, panoramic view.

(7) Retrace your steps for about thirty metres, then leave the marked path on your left and continue straight ahead. A few dozen metres further on, as you reach a cleared area, follow the path on the right which leads into the heath. This path then descends gradually along a ledge to another single track coming from the left. Turn left onto this track to head back towards the Valat de la Font de Bonnet.

(8) Head down along the valley on the right. The path becomes a track and, a few hundred metres further on, joins a small road, the Chemin de Saint-Roman.

(9) Turn right onto the Chemin de Saint-Roman and, after a left-hand bend at a small bridge, take thesecond street on the right. Shortly afterwards, at the three-way junction, continue along the street that climbs to the left, which is still the Chemin de Saint-Roman. Carry on straight ahead along Rue du Coin du Loup, which runs behind the temple, and you’ll come out onto Place de la Mairie at the bar opposite the ‘griffe’.

(10) Walk to the right of the ‘griffe’ and enter the circular square at the centre of the village, passing under the portico. Continue straight on along a very narrow street which then turns left and leads close to the church. Then head down to the right along Rue du Four, which features a fine row of façades and leads to the rampart walk overlooking Boulevard du Portail Bas.

(11) Turn left, then, at the tower, cross the boulevard to the right to reach Impasse Arjalas. Follow the cul-de-sac, then head down to the right along a pedestrian alley which leads onto Rue des Arènes. Then turn left and left again at the small roundabout to reach the arena.

(12) Walk along the left-hand side of the arena and turn right immediately afterwards onto Chemin de Saint-Gilles. Continue straight on until you reach a roundabout at the junction with Route de Langlade. Carry on straight ahead onto Chemin de la Font de Rouve until you reach the cycle path, which is a few dozen metres further on to the left. Take the cycle path, passing the sports facilities, and you’ll come back to the junction you passed on the way there.

(1) Turn right to return to the starting car park in front of the sports hall (S/E).

A lovely walk. The start is a bit tricky, but it doesn’t last long – that’s the bit where you walk along the stream bed. Then, once you come out of it, cross the road, head to your left, and take the little path to the right of the bench in front of the superb viewpoint. (I had a bit of trouble finding the path!). After that, the rest went very smoothly. I really enjoyed this walk.

A lovely route with various viewpoints and points of interest: a mill, a spring, a drystone shelter; the return route through the village is very picturesque. A few of the climbs are a bit steep, but they’re short. I had a lovely time and saw the gliders taking off from Saint-Come.

A truly lovely route, which is a bit of a surprise at first as you follow the stream bed (not to be attempted after heavy rain). As mentioned, there are a few technical sections, but nothing too difficult. The view when you reach the mill is superb and well worth a picnic stop for those who aren’t early risers!!! Thanks to the author.

Hello,
I did print out the walking route and we decided to follow it. We went wrong at points 2–3 and followed the PR (yellow markings), which joins the PR Serre des Vallons, whereas we should have turned left. We couldn’t find the yellow markings for the path leading down to the stream.
We thought there was a new path with yellow markings… So we ended up further up on the D1 road. We hadn’t brought the IGN map with us, so we couldn’t realise our mistake whilst walking. We weren’t able to complete the walk as planned.
We’ll try to do this walk again.
Kind regards
Marie Christine
PS: I know we’re not supposed to mention the signposting, but that’s what led us astray…
