(S/E) Head to the banks of the Rhône and turn right onto the towpath, following it for 200 metres. Turn right into a narrow lane which leads back to the D19.
(1) Turn left onto the D19 and follow it for 1.5 km.
(2) When you reach a fork in the road, turn right towards Lhuis via the D79 and continue until you reach the church at Lhuis.
(3) Turn right onto the D41 and climb for 600 metres.
(4) Continue on the D41 to the right for 6 km on a gradient of between 5% and 7%. The road levels out before reaching the Col des Fosses.
(5) Begin a lovely descent to reach Lac d’Ambléon.
(6) Carry on along the D41 for 5 km to reach Appregnin.
(7) Carry on to Saint-Germain-les-Paroisses.
(8) Leave the D41 and turn left onto the D41a, which takes you along a lovely road to the entrance to Contrevoz at the junction with the D32.
(9) Turn left onto the D32 and head towards the village centre.
(10) At the war memorial, turn right twice towards Andert and Condon via the D83. Continue on to Andert and Condon.
(11) At the “Stop” sign, turn left for 200 metres, then right at the fork. Follow the D83 downhill until you reach the D1504.
(12) Turn left for 200m (take care on this busy road) then take the first road on the right (this is still the D83). Pass under the railway line and continue for 1km along the D83 to point 291, the junction with the D107.
(13) Turn right onto the D107, drive through Cressieu and continue on to Billieu.
(14) In the centre of the village, veer left and follow the D69 up to the junction with the D69c.
(15) Carry on straight ahead along the D69c to pass through the village of Marignieu.
(16) Head back down to the junction with the D37.
(17) Turn right onto this road, pass through the village of Pollieu, then head uphill for 1 km to reach the lovely Lac de Barterand,
(18) Follow the lake’s edge, then continue along the D37 until you descend to the Rhône.
(19) At the bottom of this descent, turn right, then immediately left, crossing the road to join the ViaRhôna. Follow it to the left until you reach a bridge.
(20) Pass under this bridge before heading back up onto it after a 360° ‘turnstile’. After crossing the bridge, rejoin the ViaRhôna at the small car park on the right and continue for about 1 km.
(21) Leave the cycle path to the right and rejoin the D37, heading up to Massignieu-de-Rives.
(22) At the junction, head towards Yenne, staying on the D37 for 5 km, until you reach the Old Rhône.
(23) Cross it to join the D1504 on the outskirts of Yenne.
Caution is advised on this busy stretch of road, which you’ll take to the right after crossing the bridge to pass through the Gorges de la Balme, initially until you reach a junction.
(24) Carry on, then turn left into the Balme tunnel. You’ll reach the village of La Balme and its church.
(25) Turn right towards La Charrière.
(26) Turn left; after 100 metres, turn right and follow the local track leading to the sewage treatment works (visible from the valley).
(27) Head left for 1.5 km and rejoin the ViaRhôna, this time heading towards Geneva-Lyon.
(28) Follow it to Brégnier Cordon, at a place called La Bruyère, passing by the leisure centre.
(29) At this point, there are two options: either follow the cycle path back to the starting point, or – the option I recommend – turn right to cross the village and reach Glandieu after 4 km, passing in front of the magnificent waterfall in the centre of the village.
(30) Carry on until you reach the D19 on leaving the village; turn right for 200 metres, then left at the junction, staying on the D19, which you follow as far as Saint-Benoît. You’ll arrive at the church.
(31) Take a small road on the left towards La Sauge and rejoin the cycle path on leaving the village. A few more kilometres and we’re back at the starting point (S/E).
