Start from the Parking de l’Espérance. Follow the ‘Green Ring’ signposts throughout.
(S/E) Head towards the Novotel Atria along Avenue de l’Espérance. Cross the Espérance junction, turning left. Take the Promenade François Mitterrand along the River Savoureuse.
(1) Walk alongside the River Savoureuse. At the corner of a building, turn right, walk past a car park and turn left onto Avenue Jean-Moulin.
(2) At the traffic lights, turn right onto Rue de Marseille. At the end of the street, you’ll reach the banks of the Étang des Forges. Turn right and walk along the edge of the lake until you reach the water sports centre buildings.
(3) Leave the lake, then head up the track to the right towards the Tour de la Miotte and cross Rue de la 5ème Division Blindée. After the allotments, follow the footpath uphill: it joins another cross-path. Turn left; after two successive hairpin bends, the path passes under a tunnel and emerges at the foot of the Fort de la Miotte’s perimeter wall.
(4) Continue to the right and walk alongside the fort on your left. After the fortifications, take the upper path which crosses over the N83. Climb the steps, then turn right and walk alongside the fortifications of Fort de la Justice on your left until you reach the southern tip.
(5) Take the hairpin bend to the left. Pass under the monumental archway, then head slightly uphill to the right towards the dovecote; its terrace serves as a viewing point. Then turn left and continue along the cliff edge on the Chemin de la Justice. Cross over the road and head into the castle’s defensive complex to reach the Char Martin.
(6) Turn left and follow the castle’s perimeter along the third line of moats of the fortified site. When you reach the counterscarp bastion, turn left, go round this structure and continue due west along the dip in the ground. At the ‘Trou du Diable’ (fortified staircase), descend the path overlooking the Fourneau district and the town of Belfort.
(7) The path passes beneath the Lion and leads onto the road heading towards the postern gate. Turn left onto the Montée du Château, then take the Rue des Bons Enfants and cross the Place des Bourgeois.
(8) At the junction, turn right and pass under the Porte de Brisach. Cross the Demi-lune. At the next junction, turn left onto Rue Jean-Pierre Melville. Then follow Rue sous le Rempart to the left until you reach the car park where you started (S/E).
