The Orbe Gorges from Le Day to Orbe via Les Clées

The Gorges de l’Orbe offer magnificent scenery in all seasons. This route, on the left bank, is better suited to the wetter months than the one on the right bank. There are no major difficulties, but some downhill sections can be tricky if you’re walking after rain, with mud and a risk of slipping. Walking poles are not a bad idea, which is why I’ve classified the route as of medium difficulty
This route partly overlaps with the Gorges de l'Orbe route featured on the website.

Description of the walk

Take the SBB to Le Day station.

(S) Look out for the walking trail marker at Le Day station. Head towards Orbe and Les Clées, and at thefirst junction, turn left towards the Gorge de l’Orbe on the left bank. You will soon reach a fairly steep descent through the forest. Take the steps to reach the Les Clées dam.

(1) Cross the dam, then turn right to follow the river towards Les Clées and Orbe. Continue along the path, which winds up and down, hugging the rock faces. Ignore the path on the right that climbs up to Saut du Day and Le Day, and continue along the right bank to the Usine de l’Île.

(2) Cross the bridge and follow the well-marked path on the left bank to the entrance of the village of Les Clées, after passing through several tunnels.

(3) Cross the bridge on the left and head up towards the village centre, following the yellow markings. After the village café, take the tarmac road, then leave it for a path that climbs slightly to the left, before the cemetery, and descend to continue along the higher ground, following the left bank of the Orbe.

(4) Follow this bank along the well-marked path to reach the crossroads at a place called Le Plumé.

(5) Continue straight ahead along the hillside path to the Montcherand reservoir and its car park.

(6) Continue along the penstock leading to the En Platé hydroelectric power station. Go round it on the left before heading down the tarmac road. You will reach a footbridge over the river.

(7) Cross the Orbe via the footbridge, take the path uphill on the left, and follow it for about 1 km to another hydroelectric power station. You will then reach the tarmac road, followed by the Orbe football pitches. Pass between the two pitches and you will come to another bridge over the Orbe.

(8) Cross the bridge and then follow the signposts for Orbe town centre and Orbe station, the end point of this route (E).

A very enjoyable hike in these hot weather conditions. The Le Day - Les Clées section is the most interesting as it is closer to the river and has the pretty waterfall of Le Saut du Day. After Les Clées, the wide path is well above the water in the undergrowth. There are several nice picnic spots by the water just before Les Clées and also on the 'marmittes' site at Les Clées (quite busy).

Very nice walk! Along a stream, lots of nature and forest. Be careful which way you go: it's uphill the other way 😂

Thank you @Christian55 for your comment.
I did get a bit confused (age? ) and the route does follow the left bank of the river up to point 7.! I've corrected the description to avoid any confusion.

The end of point 3 of the description is strange: "descend to join the right bank of the Orbe". In reality, the path on the left climbs and joins a track that descends along the left bank of the Orbe. The right bank of the Orbe is only reached at point 7 of the description.
