(S/E) On leaving the station, cross Boulevard de la Gare, turn left, go round the bar-tobacconist-betting shop, and turn right onto Avenue du Général Leclerc. Cross it 50 m further on at the first set of traffic lights and climb the few steps to a small square opposite.
Head towards Avenue de Paris, turn right, then take the first left onto Rue de l’Église.
(1) Pass the church and a beautiful historic house on the left and continue straight ahead.
Cross over the motorway (N19), then immediately take the path on the left which leads into the forest. When you reach the Ferme du Piple (the château of the same name is not visible), turn right along the boundary wall. Cross at the pedestrian crossing just before the roundabout.
(2) Opposite, enter the Grosbois Regional Forest. Continue along the path opposite, passing under the high-voltage power lines. When you reach the Pelouse du Progrès, cross it to find a lovely avenue opposite. Turn left onto Allée Élisabeth. After about 800 m, at a junction marked by a fine oak tree on the left (bearing a sign for Allée Élisabeth), turn right onto Allée Wagram.
Cross a path and take the track opposite, which turns left after 200 m.
You will arrive at the Chêne des Bruyères, a remarkable tree, though apparently dead.
(3) Continue towards the car park, pass under the high-voltage power lines, and enter the housing estate opposite via the narrow lane through the gap in the boundary wall. Turn immediately right and enter the forest.
Take the first lane on the left (Allée Royale). At the second T-junction, take the second left onto a path that continues through a housing estate. Continue straight ahead along Rue de Brie, which leads to the Parc des Sports de Sucy.
(4) After passing through the gate, take the path on the right and go round the main facilities via the forest paths.
Following the fence, you’ll reach an artificial stream which you follow. Cross the first footbridge and walk alongside the lake on your right. After crossing a bridge, take a path on the right (fountain at the junction), leave the park and continue straight ahead along Allée du Parc.
At the roundabout, turn right onto a path and you’ll reach a second roundabout with traffic lights (pharmacy on the left).
(5) Cross over and enter the Parc de la Garennière straight ahead. Follow the main path; at the first fork, take the path on the right, then when you reach a housing estate, turn right, then left into a green corridor running alongside the Ruisseau de la Fontaine de Villiers, a stream that is very deep-cut in places. Continue to the end of this clearing, for about 1.5 km, until you reach a road.
(6) Follow it to the right, climbing steadily. After about 500 m, take a path on the left (at a speed bump, just after a junction). You will soon reach another path: take the left.
Cross a culvert, then turn left into a wide open gully in the forest, which more or less follows the Morbras.
You’ll reach a road via a small embankment. Cross over, then take the lane leading up towards the Amboile Gymnasium.
Cross the small car park and enter the Parc du Morbras.
(7) Walk down to the Morbras stream, then turn right onto the path that curves sharply along the right bank. When you reach a series of steps on the right, climb them to reach an area with a gazebo and picnic tables: ideal for a midday break whatever the weather.
Then head back down the slope along a small path to the edge of the stream. Follow it to the park exit.
(8) Turn left onto a path with a few flights of steps leading down to Rue Gambetta. Turn right and walk along the pond. Cross a bridge, then turn left into Rue Pasteur.
You will reach a sort of semi-circle, situated in line with the dual-lane avenue that led to the Château de Grand Val, of which only a single, rather unimpressive wing remains today, but where Denis Diderot is said to have lived during the final years of his life.
(9) Retrace your steps and take the first right, Rue de la Ferme.
Cross the large square courtyard, still flanked by the old buildings of the château’s farm, now occupied, amongst other things, by the cultural centre. Pass under the portico and turn right into the “Cité Verte”, a complex of large square-shaped blocks scattered throughout a vast wooded park.
Follow a series of paths, which first pass to the right of the first block, then between the next two, until you reach a tarmac path.
(10) Cross this and, continuing more or less southwards along the paths, reach the rear of the Château de Sucy. Walk around it, admire the fountain of the four seasons, and exit through the porch. Take the avenue on the left, cross it at the pedestrian crossing and arrive at the Château de Haute Maison.
(11) Walk around the château, take the path on the left after the brick building, cross two small car parks and follow the path straight ahead into the wooded area (Parc Halévy).
Cross a road, then walk along the left-hand side of the cemetery wall to reach Fort de Sucy.
(12) A small part of the fort is open to the public; then retrace your steps.
Just before the end of the park, take a path on the left before the first buildings, then turn right onto Rue Halévy. At the crossroads, take the street on the left and cross Parc Chaumoncel diagonally.
When you reach Avenue Churchill, turn left, then immediately right before the bus stop, onto the path that quickly becomes Rue Sainte-Amaranthe. Cross a road and open the gate opposite to reach the viewpoint on Rue du Gal Ruelle (private, but access is permitted).
(13) Return to the gate, take the street on the left to Saint-Martin Church.
Turn left into the passage (between the hairdresser’s on the left and the parish centre on the right), then head down to the right. Turn right onto Rue des Remparts, then left after 50 metres through a discreet passage under the building, signposted “Jardin des Senteurs”. Continue along a series of paths that zigzag to Rue de Boulards.
(14) Cross it and continue opposite along the Sentier de la Garenne.
At the T-junction, take the path on the right. Cross two roads, then follow a track through the park opposite. You’ll reach Avenue du Piple; cross it and, a little further on, you’ll find a well-marked path.
200 m further on, at the crossroads of paths, take a path on the right.
About 300 m further on, you’ll arrive near the corner of the boundary wall of Château du Piple.
(15) Follow the main path, which winds its way, but without ever losing sight of the wall on your left, and
you will reach the D229. At the corner of the wall, you can see the pretty Maison Rouge above the gate.
(16) Continue along the D-road heading south.
Go round the roundabout, cross over the N19 and arrive at the station (S/E) .
