Start from the large car park at km 8, between Espira de l'Agly and Vingrau, on the D12, next to a large water tower with a sloping roof.
(S/E) Opposite the quarry, walk a short way and you’ll find the memorial to Francis Mas, a famous local rugby player. Go round it to the right and follow the military zone on your right (signs indicate this. Do not venture in; it is forbidden and the military are strict about this).
After 400 m and the first hill, follow the yellow markings and do not turn left. Shortly afterwards, enjoy a magnificent view over the whole of the Roussillon plain, the Albères, the Aspres, the Canigou massif and also the Étang du Barcarès. If you know the region a little, have a go at spotting Espira de l’Agly, Rivesaltes, Barcarès, the airport, Neoulous, the Massane tower or the Moulin à Vent district in Perpignan. Enter the pine forest and you’ll come to a three-way junction.
(1) Follow the yellow markings and keep to the left. After passing the first two villas in Montpins, continue with caution, staying close to the roadside. Turn left at the next two junctions and you’ll reach a three-way junction at the bottom of the valley.
(2) Leave the yellow markings and continue to the left. Cross a grove of cultivated cork oaks and you will soon reach the start of a DFCI track on the left.
(3) Follow it and go through the wooden gate. Walk for about 800 m and you’ll reach a fork after passing through a small copse of wild olive trees.
(4) Turn left and follow the valley floor (blue markings) to the next junction.
(5) Take the track that climbs to the right. A short but steep slope leads to the water tower car park (S/E).
